Here's one from my trip to the Narrows. How'd I do?

Really like the low angle and choice of shutter speed.

Love the angle and framing; the colors look a bit over-cooked, HDR like, though.

Thanks! And yeah, I agree. After posting it here the reds came out too much. Looked fine on my monitor before posting on the forum though. Weird.

Very cool. How long did it take to get the shot?

My thoughts too. Will be there in a few weeks and am hoping we avoid t-storms/flashfloods that I encountered last year.

I agree with what others have said in regards to the photo. Good angle, like the longer exposure to show movement, but the saturation is too much. You already knew that so I'm sorry to be redundant. Nice shot though, really gets me excited for my trip. I hope you made it to Angel's Landing.

Thanks guys. Not sure what you mean by how long it took to get the shot. How long till people got out of the way? How long to hike to this particular shot? How long the shutter speed? I'll answer all of them if need be! Anything to talk about Zion!

And how's this for a the saturation? Anymore and it won't look like the actual canyon that day.

I'd try keeping the saturation and dialing back the blacks a little bit; I think it's the blacks/grays that are too strong rather than the colors.

We were there May 21. We got to Zion Adventure Company right when it opened at 8am in order to rent our dry pants, shoes, waterproof bag and walking stick. I'm sure the water will have warmed up by the time you go but it was still only about 45-50 degrees so we opted for the dry pants. I would say though, even if you don't get the pants, get the shoes! Those shoes are awesome!

After the shuttle ride, we got to the trailhead about 945am. We hiked up through Wall Street and back and were back at the shuttle by 230-300pm. I want to say this shot was taken right before Wall Street so only about 2 hours into your hike from the shuttle. It took 2 hours 45 minutes to get to the end of Wall Street, and it took 2 hours to hike back to the shuttle.

Because we went as early as we did, there weren't a ton of people I had to wait for but on the way back near the trailhead there were hundreds of people starting the hike. I would definitely say get out as soon as possible to beat the crowds. On that same note, there wasn't a cloud in the sky the day we went and the sun blew out a lot of my shots as the range of light was just too much. I just said screw it for those shots and just enjoyed how awesome the canyon was!

And if you wanted to just know the shutter speed and not all that other stuff, it was 10seconds at f16 and ISO 100.

I was curious as to how long you had to wait for people to get out of the way. I went last summer and there were a lot of people on the trails. Even though the water was muddy and fast due to t-storms and flash flooding, there were hundreds upon hundreds navigating the narrows. I opted out as I wasn't going to mess with any type of flooding situation.

I think the 2nd picture looks better. I know what you mean about Zion having colors that look unreal, it just looked a bit too much. Have you tried a BW conversion?

Did you use Photomatix or another HDR software program for this shot? It has a strong HDR look to it... The Narrows presents itself differently throughout the day. In June, the wall to the left of the entrance to Orderville Canyon will glow orange from reflected light. Rather than show every facet of the canyon walls, shadow often creates contrast and mood. This photo was taken a week ago. During the summer, I find it better to take the 6am shuttle out to Sinawava, hike like a mother up river, and then travel back slowly taking pictures as the crowds escaping the heat start to move in.

No, not an HDR. Just a bit of levels, masks, little dodging and burning. I was in the narrows for 6 hours and came away with only a couple usable shots because of the light.
