Has anyone used the newest version of Magic Lantern on
the Canon 5D MK III for stills?

I read an article that claims you can get a 14 stop dynamic
range with Magic Lantern on stills in Raw.

Can anyone confirm this?

Or does it just add more noise?

Craig

That's probably a fair assessment of the total dynamic range, because it's just a little less than what the sensor itself is capable of.

ML does this by reading out alternate rows of the sensor at high and low ISO (values that you select) and then merging them into one file. You run a post-process on this file to make it readable by Lightroom, Photoshop or whatever your choice of PP program is, and then process it normally.

The trick is that the extreme dark and light levels of the image are rendered with half the vertical resolution. This is usually not a big deal unless you have great amounts of detail in those extremes; most pictures do not show a visible difference unless you pixel-peep. It does not increase the noise; in fact, the use of the sensor in this manner greatly reduces the amount of noise present in the output file.

Here is a thread on the subject of dual ISO. One thing to keep in mind is that the thread started when they were developing dual ISO. They have made many improvements since then.

There are many other reasons to use ML for stills. I personally love the RAW histogram with ETTR hint, auto mirror lockup on self-timer and auto-bracketing features. These are core features and are available on the 5DIII.

Why wouldn't you? It doesn't change the camera, only messes with the bootflag to look at your card for the firmware vs onboard. If you don't like it, update the firmware again and tell it to reset the bootflag from what I have read.

With the latest 7D ML you don't even need to do that; you just insert a card without ML and the camera defaults to the stock firmware on power-up. I bet the current 5D version behaves similarly now.

The 5d3 was a bit different, and according to the FAQ, I believe you have to rerun the firmware update to choose to remove the bootflag.

Does anyone have a link to the most recent
Magic Lantern 5D MK III build?

I'll test it out and post a couple before and
after images.

You can also look at the nightly builds if you are waiting for a particular feature to be added.

Thanks,

There are so many extra features that it is
a little overwhelming.

It's incredible the amount of stuff they have
added.

Fair enough. I read "you can disable it by uninstalling" as that the bootflag doesn't cause errors if you remove ML from the card. That my not be what they meant.

On the 7D pressing the set button during boot will not load ML. It will boot with a blank card, i.e. no ML. And you can uninstall ML by running the firmware again.

It wouldn't surprise me if the 5DIII acts the same way, but since I don't have a 5DIII I haven't checked.

Direct from the 5D3 thread for uninstallation...

You run the ML firmware update menu option with the FIR file on the card, and it must ask you whether you want to uninstall it, and it resets the bootflag.

Installation:
1) Format the card from the camera.
2) Make sure you are running Canon firmware 1.2.3.
3) Copy ML files on the card and run Firmware Update.

Uninstallation:
1) Run Firmware Update from your ML card.
2) Follow the instructions.

What's hot:
- bootflag issue solved! (p.s. some bloggers got it wrong, you still enable it in the camera, but you can disable it by uninstalling)
- installation is really easy (simply unzip the files on the card, update firmware and you are ready to go)
- uninstallation is equally easy (update firmware and follow the instructions)
