7D2/staying crop in the future.

This could turn into a fighty thread... but it's on my mind.

If the 7D2 comes out and looks great, I wonder if it might be a good idea to stay APS-C.
I would like to keep using my EF-S lenses. I imagine next year I might like to step up to a more 'pro' camera.

For me, the main thing I'd look at is low noise performance on the crop sensor.

Any thoughts/advice?

Can't see a 7D2 ever happening. All 7D owners are asking for better ISO and improved IQ, but Canon FF cameras aren't far enough away from the crops IQ to enable Canon to give 7D owners this without trampling over the 5D/6D. This leaves Canon with nowhere to go with the mythical 7D2

I'd be surprised if it didn't stay APS-c.

The 7D has been the top of the APS-c line since it came out. I strongly suspect it will continue to do so.

Anyone who thinks it should be 35mm (or even APS-h, not that that is going to happen) should just buy a 5DIII or something.

High density APS-c sensors aren't going anywhere. Frankly, I hope they don't. There are real advantages to them. Increasing functionality and improving the signal to noise ratio would make what is already an amazing camera even better. FF fanboys can feel free to ignore it if they wish.

It will never happened....IMO.

It's called a 70D.

Even though I have a 7d, I'll never buy another crop DSLR. It's either full frame for me or mirrorless crops.

There's absolutely no indication the 7DII won't be APS-C. Canon prices the 7D and 6D roughly the same. They both cover different demographics. The 7D is aimed for photographers that want crop for the telephoto capabilities/ability to be faster because of the smaller mirror/sensor. If the 7DII gets improved ISO, speed, and the live phase detect the 70D has, it will be a hit.

Yeah, I hope this is what it becomes. I'd sooner stay with APS-C if the noise is improved, etc.

The way Canon cycles come about, they probably will announce the 7DmkII at the end of the year.

Not sure what would give you that impression, but you're almost certainly wrong.

And yeah, they are far enough away from FF cameras despite your persistence in saying they aren't. Ask anyone who shoots both formats regularly, the FF advantage isn't some made up thing, it's there.

That said, unless you're shooting huge prints or fine detail shots at ISO6400+ regularly that shouldn't be your biggest consideration between crop and FF, there are other advantages to going FF as well as disadvantages, it's up to a individual to decide where their needs lie.

To say they won't release a well spec'd crop body because it would "trample" FF sales is ridiculous. They'd be foolish not to come out with something to compete with Nikon's D7100 and Sony's A77ii especially since the industry has been raving about the need/want for a 7Dii for years now, there's almost no doubt that it's in the works.

The 7DII has broken every Canon upgrade schedule they have ever maintained. APC was always on about an 18 month cycle. The 7DII is now on 59 months and counting. That even breaks the 36 month FF upgrade cycle by a large margin.

Indeed. One thing Canon doesn't ever seem to skimp on is the quality of each camera's sensor. For my style, I like FF. The 7D was revolutionary for having its AF and customizable buttons, but was not a FF killer in terms of IQ. It is amazing how manufacturers can raise the bar with ISO and MPs for each sensor size. Physics dictates that sensor size does have an effect on IQ, though. If a APS-C and FF sensor of the same generation have the same MP, the FF will have larger photosites. More light rays will hit a photosite (reducing noise and change in diffraction ).

I'm sure the 7DmkII will have improved ISO: that is one upgrade that always seems to happen.

The 7D and the 6D have no siblings in the Canon lineup. Those other APS Canons have been the "consumer" tier Rebels and XXD. This is all speculation, but it would make sense for Canon to maintain a 7D and 6D line...they're quite different offerings and are another in-between from the XXD to the higher end Canons (and compete with the Nikon/Sony offerings). The rumor mill has said the 7DmkII might be delayed because of the refinement of a phase detect live view sensor.

True, if we look at glass half empty, Canon might decide to cut the number of DSLR offerings because overall DSLR sales are dropping. Canon's highest sales are the cheapest Rebels, but they don't seem to be dropping the other lines.
