Is it just me, or does it seem like used crop lens prices are dropping like crazy lately?

  • The only 15-85's that have sold lately are those listed at $450 or less.

  • Sigma 17-50 OS is going for like $350 on ebay and that was hard to find under $600 last year.

  • Tamron 17-50's are now more like $250 and the VC version ($600 new) at $300-325.

  • Canon 17-55 are under $600 easy.

  • 18-135 STM now sells for way under $300, was almost $500 last year.

  • I think the 10-18 from Canon killed the value of any crop UWAs. Sigma 10-20s are going for $300, Tokina 11-16's for under $400, 10-22's have never been this cheap.

  • Sigma 30mm's are like $250-300 used now.

  • 55-250's are hard to sell even at $100.

I'd be really wary of investing a lot of money in new crop lenses. Seems like L lenses and other good FF lenses still hold their value as well as ever (except the 24-105L)

And crop camera bodies devaluation seems even worse...

You can thank the entry cost of full frame going down for those savings. Used 5d for about $500, new 6d for under $1500- the cost for entry to full frame has dropped dramatically from where it was even 2 years ago. More people upgrading to full frame = more EF-S lenses going up for sale.

They are "savings" for people buying, but I have 3 lenses on my list above I've thought about selling. Not good for those of us who assumed lenses hold their values as well as they used to.

I know when I sold some crop stuff recently it seemed like it took forever to sell.

Maybe if a new pro crop body comes out that will help prices though.

On the other hand it's a great time to be buying the lenses.

Agreed. Try ebay or craigslist- since this site is geared towards people who are actively interested in improving or studying photography, there tend to be more buyers looking for high end equipment, and more savvy shoppers willing to wait for a deal on the lens they want. When I unloaded my T4i kit after picking up a 5d II, I put an add up here for $500 and got no offers- put it on ebay a week later and got $575. While paying the fees is irritating, it was still worth it, and you will reach a higher concentration of buyers who can use EF-S lenses.

Ebay has very low prices for the lenses mentioned here, plus you lose 10% in fees. $500 on ebay is the same as $450 here.

I'm not really looking for specific help maximizing my individual sale prices, just discussing how it seems like the bottom is falling out of the crop sensor market.

For the Canon lenses, it's because Canon has aggressively dropped the new price of these lenses over the last 6 months. The used market follows.

Buy my Sigma 30 1.4! I bought it used here not long ago, but don't need it now that I have the 50 1.4 on a ff!

Canons refurbs sales are one of the reasons.

I dunno... they've had refurb sales since forever. The prices on the refurb site are affected by the MSRP canon lists for each lens. The sale is just a percentage off the refurb value. Canon dropping the list price for lenses like the 10-22 is why the value is going down. Great new APS-C lenses like the 10-18 IS (which is super cheap) aren't helping, either.

I didn't think about it before, but the guy who mentioned full frames becoming more affordable is onto something too, I think. If you can buy a truly amazing (for the price) 6d for 1200-1500 bucks, then suddenly buying a bunch of expensive crop-only lenses makes less sense. I skipped the 17-55 and sold my 10-22 when I realized what the 5d mk1 was going for used.

Canon and others shifting prices of older lenses down to make some more room for the next gen APC lenses in the $1000+ range, i.e. updated 17-55?

wasn't the 17-55 1100 when introduced? I know it was 1050 about a year ago.
