I think there were two parents to either side of you shouting "Look here, kids!" Probably needed some crowd control.

Boy, that looks and sounds like really tough conditions to be shooting anything. 24 kids (probably on a sugar high) together, in a large room with loud music and poor lighting. Did you use a speedlight or pop up flash? If the ceiling is low (which I don't imagine it is), you can bounce the light from up above to diffuse and even out the light. Direct flash aimed at your subject in the dark is difficult to pull off. You can see the blown highlights on the kids' faces in the front row, then the light intensity fading on the kids in the back and on the sides.

Thanks for that, the ceiling was too high to bounce the flash light, I only have a Metz 44 AF-1 with diffuser box so I was pretty limited there too. there were about 6 parents keep shouting at their kids and yes the sweets were free flowing. I slept well that night. Thanks for the comments.

You got 2 dozen kids at a party together, in focus, and recognizable in the image which is a major accomplishment all by itself. The fact that it really looks quite good is a major plus. Nice job.

Great image. It's technically good enough to not get in the way of the subject matter at all--the expressions are hilarious !

agree with christopher, the expressions are great - if the kids were all looking direct at the camera, would look too "staged".

If you do like the staged look, get the mums behind you, shout out to the kids "when i count to 5, say sausages".
