I have a work conference in Phoenix the 2nd week of Feb next year. It starts on a Sunday and I will be traveling into town either Friday evening or Saturday morning. I will be in DT at the convention center without a car (I could get one if its worth it). Anything worth checking out in the Phoenix area?

That Wednesday I will be done and picking up a car (if I dont already have it) and heading to Vegas where my wife and daughter will be flying into. We plan to stay there till Friday morning when we will leave and head to the South Rim of Grand Canyon.

We will fly back out of Phoenix on Monday afternoon.

I am just starting my planning for this, is there anything around the canyon or phoenix area I need to put on the plan? I enjoy landscapes, and with the early sunsets in Feb. I plan to try and get out away from light and try some night photography as well.

Anyplace worth a quick detour on my solo drive from Phoenix to Vegas?

Hey, dude, we've missed you in our FaceBook group!

Of course, I don't live in that area, although there are some POTN members that do, Jay Beckman and Kristy Snyder are both "stand outs", but you might check out the Arizona Highways Magazine FaceBook page, they put out a lot of shots on there:

Will check it out today, I am doing my best to try and not pack this trip to full, or let it grow to large as we are doing a week to week and a half in Glacier next july/august.

The FB group just exploded a while back and I try and keep current but I don't have enough time to keep posting. My processing back log is a joke right now. My landscapes are running like a year behind.

You might check out the Salt River area of the Tonto National Forest, about a 30 minute drive from down town. Check out a couple web sites
http://www.birderfrommaricopa.com/area-b-salt-river-area.htm (external link) and http://www.fs.usda.gov …ation/?cid=fsbdev3_018742 (external link).

If you can get away from down town on a week day this is a great spot to visit for photography. You will need to purchase a $6 pass to park in the area but well worth it. There are a couple other nice places as well, check out Gilbert Water Ranch (Riparian Center) and a few other parks in the area. They could make a great couple hour get away for you while in town.

Great thank you I will add this stuff to my research list, getting away during the conference will not be easy, it runs from 7:30am till 5pm with events happening after. But I might be able to fit things in before or after the conference.

The phoenix area is a city. So depending on your taste in landscapes it is what it is. But if you rent a car then head out east of the valley along Highway 88. You can hit up the Superstition Mountains. Then keep going and the drive to Canyon Lake, Apache Lake, and right up to when it hits Roosevelt Lake. The area between there is all very nice when the sun is coming up. Then head north and take 87 back. If you take your time that should kill most of your day. Four Peaks is right there too. However the drive up from the 87 side (never gone another way) is about 18 miles and you can rarely get over 10mph in a pickup unless you have zero regard for your suspension and underbody. Maybe not the drive for a rental but would be the best scenic drive anywhere near the metro area.

There is a dam you will probably cross to and from Vegas...it's sort of famous... ;)

When you are done with the Grand Canyon, meteor crater is a bit east of Flag. That's a love it or hate thing for most people. It's a hole in the ground, but I would think anyone into landscapes would appreciate what it is.

And last but not least....February in Northern AZ isn't like most other states. If there is a snow storm things shut down and many don't know how to drive in it. So keep that in mind.

Scottsdale can be pretty cool photography-wise!

Also Sedona, AZ!

We hit that famous damn on our last trip, however the new bridge was not yet completed so it will be a stop, probably after I pick up the girls in Vegas and are headed to the Grand Canyon.

The mountains sound great, and like a perfect way to spend Saturday before the conference if I can talk work into letting me fly out Friday evening. I do enjoy shooting in a city setting as well and will do my best on evenings and mornings during the week.

We are aware we might hit snow, and not to worried as we drive in it all the time on Mt. Hood, slow and steady wins the race.

Heading to google now to check out Meteor Crater.
