I'm sick & pissed. Less than a year old, I'm at a state 4H horse show as the contracted photog, getting ready for todays events. I take five test shots in manual mode to set my exposure with my strobes. Get ready for shot 6, dead camera. Nothing comes on. I turn it off & back on, still nothing. I pull the battery, put it back in, still nothing. I swap to another battery, still nothing. I go back to the RV and get my 5D3 and have to use it. Glad I have a couple back ups! Sending back to Canon, I really expected more, top of the line............

Did you try pulling the back up battery too so the cam can do a complete power off reset?

New means new, it doesn't mean good/flawless/infallible.

Even the best can fail. I am sure Canon will take care of it. :)

Yes, they will, I'm sure, but it sure is a bad feeling having to pull out the back up!

For me it's really heart sinking to have a new device/toy and have it malfunction so quickly.

I don't know. Sure, those rare moments that rely on reserves can be a little unnerving, but isn't the whole point to be prepared with the backstop that gets the job done while at the same time having the client witness you behave like a professional, reaching confidently for the spare without breaking a sweat?

Sure, but the good news is that you had a backup to fall back on, and a good body!

Glad you had a good back up. It is a bummer when a product fails, but they are produced by man. Stuff fails. It doesnt matter who made it or how expensive it is.

It is a small world. I was born in Meridian, Mississippi....

There is a pretty good difference in the 5d3 & 1dx when shooting sports. Getting the hard shots are just much easier with the 1dx once you get used to it. The 5d3 is more than capable. If I was not shooting sports, it would be a no issue, but I'll get through it. Two more days of shooting.

I feel your pain. I had a similar experience with my first 7D. Brand new and wouldn't work. It was exchanged for another new one, but it's still frustrating.

That sucks...I mean we are talking a body that cost twice that of 5DMKIII. I'd be pissed too.

That's the thing with electronics. It can last one shot or 1billion shots.

This was a recurring problem for me with my 1dx last summer. It took 3 trips to Canon to finally fix the problem. I'd get it back, use it for a few weeks, and it would die again. It's been fine ever since EXCEPT for one incident a few weeks ago. I was on an all-day paid shoot, turned the camera off, swapped lenses, turned it back on...and nothing. Off and back on again - nothing. Turned off, removed and replaced the lens again, turned back on - nothing. Removed the battery, waited a minute, and replaced it, and it came back to life...and so far, so good since then...but I don't feel like I can trust it after what happened last summer.

Hope you get it sorted in good time pyro

For others in Oz with the issue:
Mine is in with Canon Australia right now for the "won't power on" issue.
It's 2 months out of warranty.
Got my repair quote yesterday of $650.

Cost for post with insurance was around $75 (and they only cover up to $5000)
Sent monday 26th May from Perth, arrived NSW friday 30th, advised Canon by email it was waiting collection.
Canon advised the items get delivered to them - which eventually happened the following tuesday due to public holiday monday
Canon "received" it in on 3rd June
Quote received 13th June
Bill has been paid and Canon furnished with receipt
Will see how the turn-around time goes
