Here's a link to someone I'm following on flickr. I really like her work, and would like to emulate it but having trouble. In most of her pics, the blacks look kind of washed out (maybe even a tint to it), to give it the vintage feel. How can I achieve this in LR4? I tried lowering the blacks, lowering the contrast, but can't achieve it. I suppose I'm missing the concept. Can anyone give me some pointers?

Lightroom has a load of Presets that give all sorts of "effects"...take some time to try them out. The nice thing about Lightroom presets are that they are achieved using the LR tools, nothing "hidden" or "secret", you can visually see what adjustments have been made, tweak them to suit your taste, save a new preset for future use...

But realize that many shots that we see have had some "special" processing done outside of Lightroom, Photoshop being the "standard" image editor. If you see a shot and the photog/editor states "Lightroom only", well, good, or also there are Photoshop tools that the Raw processor in Lightroom/Camera Raw can handle quite well, just be aware that there is a distinction!

The one where the girl is lying in the water, the one where the guy is lying in the flowers with bruises on his face, the one where the boy and girl are standing in front of a beached boat...There's a distinct "washed out" look to them--I don't know the technical nomenclature, but you'll see what I'm talking about. Also, her blacks tend to have a little blue in them. I'm thinking it's the tint slider.

Thanks, I thought presets were only what I set them to. Didn't know there were preloaded presets. Will try em out. Looking at the exif of the photos, apparently she is using Photoshop 8, so I'm not entirely sure LR4 can produce the same effects.

For the vintage look it is mostly just curves adjustment. A quick google search would yield many tutorials (ie http://nicolesyblog.com …k-in-lightroom-photoshop/ (external link) )

For the blue tone just add blue to the shadows in split toning.

Thanks for this advice. Curves adjustment and split toning are 2 things in LR that I rarely use bc I don't completely understand it.

Split toning at its basic explanation is just adding color to the shadows and highlights. This can be done to a black and white image as well.

The first article was incredibly simple yet informative. In the second article, photoshop allows you to adjust the curves by dragging on the picture. Is this possible in LR? I will try it when I get home.

The Lightroom Tone Curve panel has ways of tweaking both the Luminance Tone Curve and the RGB curves. I start out with the Basic controls, then some times I'll tweak in the Tone Curve for some "fine tuning". For colors my favorite tweaking tools are in the Hue, Saturation and Luminance panels.

It was definitely the tone curves. Tried it out on some pics. Definitely have to play with it some more and tweak it to get it just right. Thanks for the help guys!

Nice that you could get results that you like!

You know, Raw processors like Lightroom have made real strides over the years! Heck, back in the early years, they were good for "basic" processing but beyond that you needed to "photoshop". These days, the capabilities with apps like Lightroom are pretty awesome!

Use the TAT (Targeted Adjustment Tool). click on the icon and then drag up or down in the image. A control point will be put on the corresponding spot on the active curve and moved with the drag. I use it frequently to adjust skin tones in people pictures. There are are also TATs on the HSL panel.

There are hundreds of free presets available on the web, doing all sorts of effects:

and no shortage of presets being sold, but my own feeling is that I wouldn't pay for something that I can figure out myself.
