Humpback Whale Breach

Took a trip to Monterey last weekend and decided to go on a whale watching tour before leaving. Was able to see a lot of cool things while also nearly puking all over the boat. Never have been sea sick before, but when sitting in the ocean being tossed all over, it took it's toll on me. Didn't throw up, but it's probably the closest I've been to doing so.

Regardless, I was able to capture this breach of a humpback whale and it made up for it all. Needless to say, never again without lots of ginger and tons of sickness pills.

Well it was worth it to get that shot, it's great! I know all about sea sickness.....ever try the wrist bands?

Thank you. I didn't actually try anything because I've never had an issue before. Granted it's been a few years since I've been on a boat, which might have been the issue, but in the past I never needed anything.

I love seeing these magnificent mammals up close. We are whale watching again this year in South Africa to see Southern Right Whales.
I got lots of tail pictures last year but wasn't lucky enough to get one breaching so close, there were several right out at sea.

Very nice. If you get sea sick did you take Dramamine or anything before? I dive and get seasick often. If you take it, take it the night before you go out.

Incredible shot. How do you time something like that? do you have a bit of a warning? or were you just looking at the right spot at the right time.

It was my first time whale watching, so really to me, it was just patience with the camera ready. From what I could tell, they would go under the water at a faster, more slanted rate before they would come up to breach (but I could just be fooling myself).

There were whales on both sides of the boat, and instead of running around chasing, I just held my ground and waited, and eventually boom. I was able to capture it. I did fail twice, but as they say, third times a charm!

Although I hate being nauseous to be able to see and capture this, I think I would take it!
