Has anybody tried a 2X tele converter (the Canon AF type) on a 75-300mm lens? What are the disadvantages? Or opinions anyways?

Canons converters will only fit on certain L glass lenes.

If you want it for the 75 - 300 lens get a Sigma or one of the other brands that are smaller, the Canon elements protrude into the rear of the lens, this why it wont work with their regular lens.

My Lizard shot was with my 70 200 2/8 L and the 2X II Canon extender on my D60 for a total of 640 MM on the lizard shot.

I am using a SOLIGOR 1.7x TC - which works with every lens.

Look samples:

I have the Sigma 2X and I doubt it will work with the 75-300 either. It won't work with a few lenses I've tried it on, including Sigma lenses. Like the Canon teleconvters,. the Sigma EX converters were desighned to work with specific lenses in the Sigma EX Series. IF it will work with any other lenses would be pure luck.

If you have your heart set on trying a converter with the 75-300,.. see if you can find info on the Kenko... it MIGHT fit.

Lastly,.. I do no think you will like the results of that lens through a 2X converter. First,. you will loose all autofocus ability. The image will most likely be very poor,. and quite frankly,. those lenses at 300mm are allready a little too long for there own good. Trying to get a steady shot at 600mm with a lens that compact will rarely get you a usable image.

If you really want to try 600mm at a dirt cheap price,.. and you don't need autofocus, try a mirror lens. Most are 500mm and under $200.00 Sigma has a 600mm version for about $230.00

Having both the 75-300 IS and the 2x extender, I can confirm that they do not work together. The 2x does work with the 100-400 though.

Also, the 2x significantly degrades the quality of the shot, at least with the 100-400, unless you have very bright light. Except for the very far ranges I don't recommend it.
