AF micro adjustment: adjust all vs. adjust by lens

Yes, you can enter values in both settings. But the only ones that are in effect depend upon whether you choose "adjust by lens" or "adjust by same amount."

This. If you don't accept it, take some pictures and look in DPP at the MA value applied.

Got it, so if I'm borrowing a lens and I want to use my general "adjust all" setting, I have to switch to that setting each time. For some reason I was thinking in my head that the camera would automatically revert to the adjust all setting if there was no specific lens adjustment specified.

If you select "Adjust by Lens" then each individual lens is adjusted by its own specific amount.

If you select "Adjust All" then all lens when attached to the body will be adjusted by the amount that you have set.

Nope. In such a case, it will apply no adjustment at all.

Actually, it is an interesting question. Suppose I set the camera to Adjust All and do the setting while having Lens 1 attached. Then I attach Lens 2, select Adjust by Lens, and do the adjustment for that lens. Now, when I switch back to Lens 1, does the camera switch back to Adjust All and assumes its setting? Or would the Adjust All be reset to zero, just because the current selection was Adjust by Lens?

When you switch back to lens 1, no adjustment will be applied. There has been no specific adjustment specified for lens 1, but the camera is still set to Adjust by lens, since that's where you left it when using lens 2.

The setting you choose in the menu is what takes precedence over everything else.

There is no automatic adjustment of values based on switching lenses unless you have specifically set them in the "adjust by lens" option and it is currently enabled.

Lenses are like people. Each one has it's own personality and quirks. For that reason I always adjust by lens as I might have to caress each lens to bring out the best the lens can offer. The only exception I can think of is what CyberDyneSystems referred to where the camera itself has an issue.

On the 5D3 and the 70D, you can adjust both ends of a zoom lens, and hope for the best in the mid-range focus.

"Hope for the best" is implemented in such a way, that if you set it to +2 at one end and +10 at the other, it will interpolate your settings in between. Thus halfway through the zoom range, you get +6.
