should I be able to fire my 20D with the switch set to PRE-release? It only works in normal. If set to pre-release it will fire the shutter once and thats it. Everytime I change modes on the camera it allows one shutter release. Why is this? I'm worried I got a bad unit.. Now, If I have it in normal mode it fires and seems to do everything normally.. The salesguy told me I would have to use it with the pre-release switch on to keep the camera awake. The camera seems to stay awake and focus fine in the normal mode.. I'm really confused..

Thanks for the help!!

Too much Gear to list!

Hi John,

The pre-release setting is designed to minimise the lag time when firing the camera remotely. It's just like having your finger pressing halfway down on the remote camera's shutter release all the time. Therefore when you trigger the remote camera using the Pocket Wizard transmitter it should fire pretty much instantaneously.

If you're not using the pre-release setting then there will be a small lag when triggering the camera - small but important. It's the difference between the camera being simply 'awake' or 'raring to go' ;)

However, none of this explains the problem you are experiencing. The 20D should fire each time you trigger it with the PW transmitter whether it is in pre-release mode or not.

I'm assuming that you've pre-focused the camera - if not turn off the AF and see how that works.

A bit more info about your exact set up might also help diagnose the problem - exactly how is the remote camera being used/triggered?

EDIT: I've not used a 20D as a remote... but it should certainly work as a remote with pre-release as evidenced here: http://www.sportsshooter.com …ge_display.html?tid=17892 (external link)

EDIT 2: If the cable proves to be faulty, take it back, get a refund and build your own! Instructions here: http://www.gophotography.net/tips/releasecanon.html (external link) ... You don't get a switch... but then, who needs it?

EDIT 3: Since this post is in the Flash forum, is there a flash involved as well?

gmen, johneric posted the same thread in multiple forums, it doesn't look like a flash issue.
