These props are divine. :) I like the real backlighting, too.

Thanks David. This was my first time working with a model. Her poses were her own. I'm used to directing people who are uncomfortable in front of the camera and I found it surprisingly strange to direct her, almost like I was afraid I'd mess up her flow. She did ask me for suggestions though and in hindsight I wish I'd spoken up a few times.

Any chance you want to let me know what you might have done to get more from that pose, or the pose in the photo I've attached below. These past few months I've been doing my best to improve my direction and understanding of posing, so anything helps.

And, any C+C is welcome and appreciated.

Here's another:

QUOTED IMAGE

In this images its her legs and feet again that look weird to me.

I know that many models prefer to do their own posing routines and that's fine, provided they understand the camera perspective. I also recognize that, for some reason, its become fadish for models to put their feet into unnatural positions. I'm sure its because some high end fashion model did it once in an ad.

The first image, in addition to the legs and feet her hands with the bent under fingers and the sever over the shoulder look.

When I was working in the theatre at university one suggest a director gave actors was to work in front of a mirror to get a feel in their muscles for how a position, facial expression etc. looked and felt.

What I've done, even with experienced models is position a tall mirror right next to me. That helps the model see a pose before the photograph makes the image. It works best when the model and photographer can establish a rhythm.
Models hits pose,
Checks in mirror, looks at camera (that's the signal to the photographer that she's happy with the look.)
Camera fires (strobes flash) that's the signal to the model to move to next pose.
If I want more than one image of a pose I tell the model to hold it and work on facial expression or I suggest a fine tune movement of head, arm, leg, hair etc.

It takes practice and experience for both the photographer and the model.

I'm not suggesting I'm expert, just that its a technique I've found works for me.
HERE (external link) is my website with model portfolios. (Take care -- a lot of them are NSFW)
The girls range from no modeling experience to professionals. Irene was one shoot where we used the mirror approach.

I also show the models the back of the camera. A: good images to encourage her, B: images that illustrate awkward poses.

another nice one Scott. Did the buildings in the background start as a photograph of urban landscape or pure Photoshop work?

The background image comes from a free plugin called Pexels where you get free stock images.

Fashion look, works for me. I would make the model sit on the edge though.

Couple of images of Emory. Both lit with a simple AB Einstein and a gridded 28 inch BD.

The two of you nailed it in the first shot. Great work IMHO

Catalog-style lighting using 7" fresnel behind silk on the right, foamcore on the left. Challenge is establishing flat illumination and filled shadows, but retaining enough directionality to generate speculars (jewelry needs it). Black side is velvet.
