So, you may have always wondered what the hell that 3D LUT adjustment layer thing is in Photoshop. You tried it and loaded some of the included "looks" and then thought, meh, when would I ever use that?

You may have even Googled it on Bing and found out that you can create your own 3DLUT "looks" in Adobe SpeedGrade, and use them in PS - then you found that tool geared toward video editing and thought, meh, I have no use for this.

3D LUT Creator may change the way you think about this seemingly specialized and inaccessible tool, especially as it relates to still image editing. The control over color is astounding and all of the grading can be exported as a 3DLUT, a set of curves or a lrtemplate for curves.

Once you have established a "look" you can use it as a 3D LUT adjustment layer within PS or a lrtemplate user preset for RGB curves moves. The integration with PS is very nice as well, permitting import of the active image from PS and sending the LUT to an adjustment layer in PS at the push of a button.

There is also a powerful masking interface that makes use of many different channels as the basis for masking.

If you edit video, and still images, you can incorporate the 3DLUT in your video editing applications as well to unify looks across media. It even includes a tool called "Degrade" which reverse engineers the curves applied to an image to create a look based on that image.

Watch the intro videos and consider giving the trial ... a trial! You may think about the mysterious 3DLUT adjustment layer in a whole new way.

Adobe just released Photoshop CC 2014 and it also exports LUTs:

Tagged for later.

My wife does video editing, but we honestly haven't been been making the most of our DSLRs by using in-camera picture styles complemented by appropriate LUTs. It's on the to-do list.

You can shoot Marvels or CineStyle and then grade that footage and save the look to an LUT.

Yeah. CineStyle is on my to-do list... but I'm not the video editor, I gotta convince her that it's important enough to add it to the workflow.

Haven't heard of Marvels, I'll go look it up, thanks.

Kirk, I would be interested in trying 3D LUT Creator but AVG says the demo download contains a Trojan Horse. FYI.
If you have the app installed I would suggest checking to see if it is talking to a web site.
