You know what? You guys pushing the superzooms are right. It didn't even enter my mind.

Thanks. I think I'll do that. I had the Canon SX110 once that was a 10x zoom equivalent to about 300mm or so, and now they have the same cameras with 20+ zoom (as mentioned).

Thanks. I'll go that route.

We expect to see some celeb shots! :D

The shots Mike posted taken with the Samyang don't look half bad.

If you scrounge up a few more ducats, for $1,069 you can get a stabilized Tamron 150-600 f/5-6.3. I know that's double what you were looking to spend, but it's a lot more flexible, and you might use it more. Pretty good bang for the buck.

You can get one in 4+ months if you order now! ;)

(Unless Tamron can start producing them more quickly.)

I figured out exactly what to get (with the help of you guys).

This: http://www.dpreview.com …acts/canon_sx700/overview (external link)

Canon SX700. It's only $329, which is under my budget.

It has 30x zoom that equals to 750mm zoom on a 35mm camera.

It can fit in my pocket (always a plus).

And even better: I can control it with my phone, which will come in handy if I choose to mount it high (I have one of those extension poles from Home Depot that reaches about 20 feet high. It's easy to mount a lightweight point and shoot to it, bungee cord it to a tree (takes a second) or hold it, and from the ground I still have the ability to rotate (and a tilt a little). Plus, through the remote software I can control all the camera features (including zoom) using my iphone. Nice

Thanks again.

I was with the SX50 thinking for the stupid long zoom but the SX700 is considerably more pocketable and the remote feature looks pretty cool. Good find!
The boards come to the rescue again! (let's just not find out that you're finding work arounds for a restraining order) ;)

I'd probably want something with a viewfinder for daytime shots at long zoom, but sx700 doesn't look bad.

It's okay that it has no optical viewfinder, because it will be remotely triggered with my phone, so I can stand in a shadow or under an awning, etc.

And about restraining orders: I'm not paparazzi. I'm PROPERazzi. :) Always polite, and I have no wish to catch anyone in an uncomfortable position. Not my style. I hate the gossip magazines. Can't stand them.

However, I do like to prank film sets. I do background work (extra) sometimes and try to put things in the frame that I'll notice later when I watch the movie. I took it a little far a few days ago, but hopefully it won't get cut.

EF 300 4L USM + 2x TC. I got those around 500$ and IQ is just perfect! (propably better than Tamron 150-600 @ 600mm).

Wouldn't count on it. Not in the center, at any rate:

I was talking about older non-is version which is sharper w/ teleconverters than newer IS model.
I have 300 4L non-is and there is not much difference in sharpness with or without 2x TC (TC just adds some CA and sometimes less contrast).

Example (600mm and f/8.0 aperture):

Haha, that's hilarious. Good times.

Very best,

Also, has anyone used something like this? It's 600mm
http://www.keh.com …1/sku-CE08999033943J?r=FE (external link)

I have a slightly older version of that lens in C/Y mount that I use on my 5D and Rebel XT. As mirror lenses go, it is pretty good. The upside is that the lens is very small and lightweight with almost no chromatic aberration. A few years back I made a thread about it with some pictures:
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=632388

It is very challenging to use well due to almost no depth of field and having to focus manually on a focus screen not designed for that. If you enjoy the challenge and want to use it for fun, and the money isn't tight, then go for it. I met a newspaper photographer who used a Sigma 600 f/8 Mirror for years for work so it can be used professionally if you are skilled enough. I presume saving bag space was the main reason.

A better choice for more serious photography would be to save up a bit longer and buy used Sigma 50-500mm 1:4-6.3 EX APO DG HSM which is a good lens and not too expensive. It is one of my favourite lenses.
