I have a collection of Canon lenses. I also have the original red & white boxes and a Pelican case.

Should the lenses go back into their boxes or stay in the pelican case for moving across the USA?

Either would be fine. Obviously the pelican is more robust. But if you pack in oem boxes, pack those boxes in a single larger box with some padding inside. Just an idea.

Heya,

Want them to be more convenient?

Or want them to survive a car crash?

Very best,

Canon ships the lenses from Japan to the US in those white boxes. It's probably OK. :)

I'm a pelican fan all the way. So many advantages.

I'd say you'd be just fine in their original boxes...although it really just depends on how well you drive. :)

I would just throw them in the pelican case and call it a day. Of course every time you open/close the canon boxes the weaker/chance of rip/break foam/etc...

I would put them back in their boxes and then those boxes in a large box with foam or padding of some type and not worry. I keep all my boxes as well :)

You have the boxes?

Held onto them for how long?

Any other use for them?

Gonna pack them empty?

See my point? :)

You know, it's funny you said that, because that's exactly what I did, and it does seem strange now that you put it that way, but at the time, I put my lenses in camera bags and took them in the car, packed the boxes in a big box, and moved. It seemed so normal at the time.

So just a couple of weeks ago when I sold my 17-40, I unpacked its box which I'd kept for 6 years since new, with all the bits that came with the lens new, and handed it to the buyer when he came.

So the "other use" was just to have it for those buyers who see its inclusion in a sale as something of value. I see empty boxes sell for $25 regularly.

So I ended up taking all the lenses & the body out of the Pelican / Domke cases and packing them back into their OEM boxes. Those boxes went into another shipping box. During the process I made a complete inventory with SN recorded.

Took a long time. Maybe it wasn't necessary but it is done.

Why did you buy a pelican case?

My best guess is you bought your case to carry and protect your lenses.
Leave the lens in the pelican case and box up the empty OEM lens boxes.
I can understand for resale reasons the empty boxes are nice to have around.
If your lenses get damage and they are not in the Pelican case then you only have yourself to blame.

The only thing you will be out is the room it takes up by moving empty boxes,
and if that is a problem to then fold the empty lens boxes up.

Whenever I tried to sell a lens in the past, buyers seemed to think that I was an idiot for getting rid of the boxes. "Dude, do you know how expensive and limited NYC closet space is?!" was not deemed a reasonable explanation, either. It was probably for the better, though - I now state that I don't have the original box even if I do - tends to weed out the persnickety and prevent future headaches. ;)
