I got my 6d in mid-Feb new from Amazon and Inever opened the battery--until two weeks ago. I put it in my charge and it just blinked like crazy for an hour. Will a amazon take it back and give me a new one?

Take it out and let it sit, then try again. The aftermarket batteries do that sometimes. Just waiting and trying it again works most of the time.

Not sure if Canon will replace a battery under warranty. They might.

If it hasn't been charged since mid-Feb, I'm not surprised that it "blinked like crazy for an hour." Leave it in the charger and see what happens.

You can also put the battery in the camera and check the amount of charge it has.

Aftermarket or not - li-ion batteries must not be stored for too long without a charge in them. All batteries has a bit of self-discharge. The special with a li-ion battery is that if the voltage goes below a specific limit, then the battery charger isn't allowed to charge the battery because of fire hazard - the battery may overheat if charged when too empty.

Canon have issued the suggestion to try to start a charge multiple times, just to let the charger possibly manage to get in a small trickle of energy on each attempt before the charger disconnects and flashes the error message. After enough such restarts, the battery just might manage to get above the criticial limit and the charger may start a full recharge.

Any li-ion battery that is expected to be stored for a longer time should be half-charged, and then placed in a cool environment like the refridgerator.

The charge makes sure that they can survive for a long time without self-discharging below the critical level.
Not charging them full, is because they age faster when fully charged.
And both self-discharge and ageing slows down when stored at a lower temperature.

It is a known problem with a batch of Canon batteries. Turn the charger upside down in the socket and that will most likely fix the issue. I had the same thing happen and called into CPS for the answer.

Thanks everyone for the responses!

BTW, this was the Canon battery that came with the 6D.

The same thing happened to my battery when I bought my 6D. I followed instructions (found here: http://rapidsuccession.blogspot.com …teries-lc-e6-charger.html (external link)) about putting the battery in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. I fully charged the battery after taking it out of the freezer, and battery has worked just fine since then.

I had the same issue with my 6D. I found on google that if you put the battery in first and plug in the charger it will work. i was doing it the other way around with no success.

OP for your sake, I hope the purchase was from an authorized retailer (amazon as the vendor). If so, it's under warranty, and Canon will replace it free of charge... though likely with a refurb?

If you bought it from a grey-market vendor, you're SOL. In such cases, you always want to check out your gear ASAP. Even with authorized vendor sales, you still want to at least visually inspect the goods in a timely manner. You could still end up with a brick in the packaging :)

I bought batteries on Amazon through one of their vendors and it was fake. I wouldn't trust the stuff you buy their unless you know it's from an authorized dealer.

My wife bought the 6D (body only) direct from Amazon, brand new for full price she even got a 3 yr with). I really had no reason to think the LP-E6 would be faulty, so I used my existing two batteries from my 60D. After selling the 60D and grip I didn't need to break out the battery as I wasn't taking any real work force a few months. You can imagine how disappointing it was to break open a new Canon battery two days before a week's trip to Vegas and find the battery was inoperative.

I will try the freezer method when I put the kids down for naps this afternoon and report back.

You still haven't shown that the battery is faulty. Li-Ion batteries just must not be allowed to discharge too deeply. That goes for brand new batteries and for batteries you have earlier charged and used. It's extra important to think twice about seasonal gear that may spend most of the time in storage waiting for next year's vacation.

If a battery is DOA right out of the packaging, that's something that Canon would replace--whether they could salvage it or not.
