nice pictures ! did you use a polarizer? Which one do you have? I'm interested to buy one but I don't want to risk to loose image quality

Hi Elodie,

I used a polarizer indeed. While I've always heard very good things about the B+W filters others mentioned, it wasn't that easy to find them in my area when I bought my filters. So I have several Hoya HD CPL filters and I think they do the job just fine. Maybe more experienced and demanding photographers would disagree though.

I keep a B+W KSM Circular Polarizer on my 16-35 at nearly all times. It's not the cheapest CPL out there, but I have never noticed ANY degradation in quality (in, sharpness, flare, or vignetting) - even when I used it on a 5DsR for extremely large-format printing. If I lost or broke mine today, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another (even at full retail) immediately. If I'm not mistaken, the KSM version has better water resistance than their standard CPLs.

Here's a shot from just a few days ago with the KSM CPL. It's uploaded at 4096px on Flicker, so feel free to download the full size image to see what it looks like:

Thank you for your answers Justin & Tareq. This polarizer seems quite flawless indeed. I can't find it with this specific name in my usual online store so I'll probably get the B+W Filtre Pola Circular (HTC) MRC XS-Pro Nano D77mm, which is probably almost the same (or even the same)!

very nice. I like the fact that we can see the wave'movement which drags us into the ocean, instead of some haze, that is very nice too, but less dynamic. What ND filter did you use if you did (6, 10 stops)?

Thanks. I just used a Cpl and 0.9 reverse Gnd, I like my shutter speeds to be inbetween 0.5 to 2 seconds for this sort of shot.

I know that B+W is a great filter brand, but i stopped almost using those screw-in or round filters because i am dedicated to square/rectangular filters so far, and this is including the CPL, so i advise you for future proof to forget about this screw in filter and just look at holder system filters, B+W isn't cheap, so why you buy it now and happy until you just go and but another filter because you upgraded the filter system, you know you can always use that square filter even as 1 filter only, and it may serve better as you don't see much vignetting in many scenarios.

And you have ultra wide angle lens, for me this is screaming [4x?] filters instead of those 77/82mm ones, this is my advice from someone went that route before, i regret buying those round filters, actually i have 1 or 2 B+W filters long time ago but i didn't sell them due to not getting good price offer so i am losing instead of getting reasonable price.

Awesome.

Thanks! Had to crop some colleagues on the left, thus the de-centered foreground

I think, this de-centered foreground shot will be my choice over a centered FG, this is my opinion, the left side there are elements in BGs that will make it not that much better as centered FG in my opinion.

Thanks for this explanation, Tareq. Actually I have a Lee filter system that I bought for a soft gray ND filter (and hopefully some Little or Big Stopper later on) but I find this system not that easy to use... I mainly photograph landscapes while I travel for holidays and I don't always take the time to screw the filter system, focus aaand put the filter... So I think a circular polarizer might be a better solution for me, as you screw it on and then forget about it while shooting.

But I have got plenty of time to think about before investing again (I'll still be a student for a few more months)...

There is no such as "i have no time" for landscape photography, even in quick vacations, i traveled in the past and i had also short times but i always manage to use filters, so either you force yourself with a time or better buy a point&shoot camera, or at least just don't use filter at all and just shoot while you are in running around.

I really can't understand people when they buy something now when there are other options and then they buy something else later, and they keep talking about low budget or can't afford, i don't know why someone can't afford now but he can afford later? i learnt in life that if i want to spend then i spend only once, i don't buy a body now because it is cheap then later i buy the expensive one, either buy expensive one even after 10 years or buy nothing, i bought 1DX, and wanted a better or similar body as backup, so i couldn't afford another 1DX and can't with 1DXII but i never though to buy 7D2 because it is cheaper and an alternative because i know i will sell it when i buy something else, but i still have many items including filters and CPL that i can't sell them so i regret why i bought them even cheap.

But in all cases, good plan if you buy that screw in now because you can, and good lucky when you can sell it, at the end do buy whatever you can and let's enjoy your shots.
