Does anyone recommend ND filters for this lens? I currently have a screw in 9 stop one, but I want to have some 3 stop and 6 stop ones as well. Would you recommend screw in again or the ones with a step up ring?
Thanks

Jan have a look at the Nisi system, i quite like it that you can use up to 3 square filters + CPL without filter physically getting in the way (for example with my old lee system if u want to use 2 square filters + the 105mm CPL you'll have to zoom to around 21mm on full frame) for about 150USD it comes with filter holder which will take all 100mm filters inc singh ray, lee etc with different adapter ring/step up ring + the ultra slim CPL

the CPL quality is very good in that i see no noticeable degradation in sharpness or colour casting for that matter tho i do find the CPL effect not as pronounced as the lee 105mm

it is what i destroyed when i took a tumble at yesterday's sunrise shoot (replacement already ordered)

^^^ I do he same as Tareq, I use the Lee system with a couple of sizes of rings.

Same here, ND, GND and CPL all rectangular/square for the Lee system. I was skeptic about the square Lee CPL but after extensive use I can say it works great plus easier and quicker switch between lenses

BTW both my images at pag 79 were with the square CPL on.

Here are 3 filters from 3rd party Chinese, what made me to post them are the price and the material used to make the filters, GLASS, i always prefer glass even not high quality over a resin high quality, i bought 3 filters from 3rd party glass which were last pieces [lucky me] and all giving me great results when used with any lens.

A. 2/3/10 stops ND:

http://www.ebay.com …Shott-Glass-/121497085981 (external link)

http://www.ebay.com …Shott-Glass-/111527600456 (external link)

http://www.ebay.com …9de653:g:cQkAAOSwPcVVmlFC (external link)

3 of them together will cost about $160 if no shipping, this price is nearly as one BIG stopper filter from LEE. You can Choose Haida which is little bit more but still cheaper than LEE/Singhray/Hitech glass versions, so i no longer look at those high brands anymore.

B. 2/3 stops GND:

http://www.ebay.com …t%3D6%26sd%3D151810525268 (external link)

http://www.ebay.com …t%3D6%26sd%3D151810525268 (external link)

I think you don't both, one of them is enough, i recommend going with 0.9 [3 stops] over 0.6, and Haida is a good filter brand and the quality isn't bad, glass too, if you find something else go for it, but i keep recommending glass filter over any plastic/resin ones regardless which brand you buy, i have LEE and Hitech resin filters and i want to buy them all, not because of low quality as they are all high quality with LEE is winner, but the resin material isn't good for scratches and flares and also color cast very slight, and cleaning is a pain in .... so even if the glass has some cons i accepted over how many cons with resin.

And here is a square CPL that you can give it a try:

http://www.ebay.com …044813:g:LMQAAOSwPgxVRzZW (external link)

Couldn't find something cheaper, i bought the LEE one before knowing about Haida, CPL glass square filters are expensive anyway from all brands even 3rd party, i saw another one cheap but i can't tell about the quality, it sounds it is deigned more for video cameras than still, but it may be used find for DSLRs, you can buy it and give it a try with that price, if it is great then others may like to buy it as a cheap alternative too.

http://www.ebay.com …a5b58b:g:9pQAAOSwcF9UWENi (external link)

About filter holder and adapter rings, also from ebay i can choose any filter holder that is designed for 4"[100mm] filters and i will go with the metal design one [Aluminium maybe] over plastic one, it is not a very big factor as i bought LEE and Hitech and both are doing the job just fine, also try to have a wide angle adapter rings, 77 and 82 are the most used for me

With above kit even if you pay a lot i assure you won't look anything else, it will be used for different many lenses for long time, i regretted buying resin filters and i am trying to sell what i have already even hitech ones, i don't stop buying $300-500 filters kit as i don't want to put something cheap in front of my expensive lenses, and with glass i won't worry much about color cast, and those 100mm filters will reduce the vignetting so much, i don't mind slightly vignetting, but i know if i didn't use those kit i will see ugly/too much vignetting at widest FL [10-18mm on FF], i took a long path/way until i found my ultimate filters kit, also you can ad something like reverse ND and Vari ND just for more effects if needed, but the above are standard to start with and use more, and some will say they don't use filters anymore because they are masters with software to have same effects, to me it is always less headache to have almost good enough shots from camera before i touch it with software for even further better results.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply!
I heard Lee is good but there are surely cheaper alternatives just as good? Which filter holds/adapters are required for this lens?

Haida is a great alternative and a bit cheaper, also NiSi but i can't see NiSi as much cheaper, i posted those filters alternatives, some i know the quality, on par with LEE or even better such as Haida, but can't talk about the others such as NiSi.

You can buy LEE filter holder if you can afford it, if not then i will post an alternative one that is good enough, and this lens is 77mm filter thread so any adapter ring of 77mm can be used, and i recommend if you buy the Wide Angle adapter ring to minimize the vignetting as much.

Here is an alternative for LEE filter holder and ring adapter you can use:

http://www.ebay.com …4f6993:g:V2cAAOSweW5VSMuA (external link)
http://www.ebay.com …lter-Holder-/171911626761 (external link)

I am not sure about how good is this filter holder or the adapter ring, also can't be sure if this adapter ring is designed for wide angle lenses or just standard, it is up to you to find out or to give it a try, the only con with this filter holder if i have to find something is that it can hold only 2 filters at once, my LEE can accommodate 3 at once.

Here is another option but i have no idea about how good the kit overall:

http://www.ebay.com …%3D15%26sd%3D171911626761 (external link)

If you buy any of those above items and gave it a try then please let us know your impressions or how you find it out, it will help many, even me if i want to buy replacement or add more or help other friends locally.

i have a nisi 10 stop ND (so big stopper) coming...will report once i get my hands on it

i have to say nisi while not the cheapest does seem to represent quality...i saw a photographer comparing the nisi 10 stop to lee and it does much better in terms of colour casting...they make 4 stop reverse grads too which as far as i am aware the only other company that does it is singh ray (and it'll burn a nice hole in your wallet, i know since i have it)

nisi filters apparently are actual glass as well whereas lee and singh ray are only resin for their grad filters

after being impressed by the quality of their filter holder/cpl if i didn't already have the singh ray and lee grads i'd probably happily go with nisi from what i've seen so far

oh and here is the comparison review:

I already gave alternatives to filter holder and adapter ring, the filter holder from that link you gave is made of resin, i found many resin-made filter holder on ebay and i didn't post the, so cheap prices too, i pointed only to a metal one as it is more resistance than resin regardless how they advertise about resistance of resin, but good you gave an option, maybe not all will g with metal ones after all.

I use the filter dudes adaptor rings these days so just thought I would recommend the ones I had used. Also my lee holder is resin/plastic. Its certainly not full metal
