Of course there are lot of differences between DPP4 and DPP3 concerning the user interface, but I'd like to discuss here the differences concerning the proposed functions (not the user interface) by each software.
For the moment I have noticed the following differences :
1. DPP4 has a new white balance tool which integrates Magenta/Green cursor and Blue/Yellow cursor. DPP 3 has something similar but less convenient as there are no such cursors.
2. DPP4 has color based adjustments
3. DPP4 has no HDR or composite tools
4. DPP4 is slower than DPP3 when converting
5. DPP4 seems to have better higlights recovery and propose some extensions to the raw histogram

May be there are other differences I haven't noticed yet. If so please share them.
Here are some details about points 4 and 5.

Speed
I tried to convert the same file using both softwares and here are the times :
DPP4 : 30 seconds
DPP3: 13 seconds

Raw histogram
DPP3

DPP4

As you can see the range is larger in DPP4 in particular in the highlights. You can move the right limit at more than 4.0 in DPP4. Furthermore, you can also move the middle point in DPP4 which allows to better adjust the curve. And as an effect the range of the exposure slider in DPP4 goes from -3 to + 3 while it goes from -2 to +2 for DPP3.

It seems that this allows to better recovers the highlights in some cases as you can see in the following samples :

DPP3

I had seen someone mention the Highlight recovery improvement in DPP 4, that's nice (for those who have a supported camera), I wonder if that will come out in the upcoming version of DPP3?

I thought it interesting that the post I read expressed a view that DPP4 is "better than Lightroom" when it comes to the highlight recovery...interesting, although it would be interesting to see some real comparative analysis!

Nice effort by Canon to improve the product, but why allow it to work with only four camera bodies? That part is a *major* fail by Canon. Hopefully, they'll realize their mistake and allow it to open up RAW images from 5DII's and other recent cameras. I'll have to stick to 3.x.x for the time being, and also because I don't have an OS that it would work with.

Also, no built in HDR, compositing or other functions the 3.x product had? Huh? One step forward and three steps back.

DLO? Anybody working with it yet know if the DLO module is included?

EDIT: Appears there is a promise by Canon that more bodies will be supported in a future release.

EDIT 2: yb, why is the second photo above way more darker (overall) than the first?

This is odd. When I loaded directories in DPP4 that I had rated and adjusted in DPP3, DPP4 did not see any of the adjustments or changes I made... Anyone else notice this?

Yes it is.

EDIT 2: yb, why is the second photo above way more darker (overall) than the first?

I have found this article on the european canon website : http://cpn.canon-europe.com …fessional_4_0_launched.do (external link)

It higlights the following new features but personnally I didn't found DPP4 faster than DPP3...

Faster, real-time adjustments.
Improved RAW file workflow.
Better, more approachable user interfaces.
Compatible with 64-bit native environments.
Colour adjustments for specific colour gamuts.
Improved highlight recovery provides expanded tonality.
Improved shadow recovery function.
Support for movie playback.
Auto Lighting Optimizer can be applied to JPEG images.
Better integration with EOS Utility.

Ironically, the 64 bit version is slower than the 32 bit old version.
Then it fixes the highlights bug, but adds a shadows bug, that is, it eats a lot of shadows, as the black level is set internally higher than the old version.
I think I'll stick with the old version for now.

But how can you compare the two images if one is darker than the other?

For me, as long time user of the classic dpp most changes are improvements and overall the performance esp. with the dlp modules. Two changes are not positive from my point of view:

- I really liked the old quick separate crop and rotation tool. It was much faster.
- Maybe connected to the loss of a separate crop and rotation tool crop and rotation is now also part of a recipe when copied from one pic to another. Meaning that if your pic contains cropping info this is copied to another pic when coping the correction recipe! Before this was separated - which was much more flexible. Normally cropping is something very individual for a pic and not something like a whitebalance or noise reduction setting which typically applies to a sequence of pics...

PS: ... I had one crash so far with about 1000 pics developed from my 5D3.

The DPP3 cropping and rotation tool was great. They lost that too?
