The DPP3 cropping and rotation tool was great. They lost that too?

Here's a quick comparison I did. I did not really work on the DPP4 image as much as I did back when I worked on it in Lightroom originally, 2 years ago. In DPP4 I basically just slammed the highlights to see what was there. Of these 3 images I think the LR one looks best, but I'm sure I could spend a little more time and get an equally pleasing result out of DPP4. This wasn't even remotely possible in DPP3.

Just fired this up, haven't fixed it yet for HiDPI (Retina in Apple talk) screens in Windows. At least DPP3 scaled correctly, just looked chunky.

Meanwhile in other news Adobe only just started supporting HiDPI in Photoshop on Windows last week (CC 2014), but you still need a magnifying glass with the RAW converter!

I've never used DPP until version 4. I was playing with DPP4 and really like the tethered shooting capability. Having said that, in general, why would I use DPP4 and not Lightroom? In other words, what does DPP4 provide that Lightroom 5.x doesn't?

The Digital Lens Optimizer (DLO) module really works wonders for ultimate sharpness and correcting aberrations specific to individual lenses. IMO for pixel peeping, I think DPP has the edge for sharpness. If I'm going to print really big, I'll probably use DPP/DLO, assuming I can get the look I want from it. I don't like LR's "Detail" slider, I think it fabricates texture that isn't there. Until LR5, I liked DPP's clone stamp tool better than LR4's spot removal tool.

DPP also smartly uses your computer's file system, saving you from LR's seemingly arbitrary and unnecessary exercise of "importing" images into it.

And, DPP is free. (Well, included with your camera purchase) It could very well be all a serious hobbyist or part-timer would ever need.

IMO the only things that LR offers over DPP are:

- Brush adjustments (great for brightening faces under hats)
- Gradient adjustment (great for darkening skies and simulating a graduated nd filter)
- Speed when going from shot to shot fitted to the screen size
- Batch converting/exporting directly to an online gallery like SmugMug, Flickr, etc
- I like LR's Vibrance and Clarity sliders
- I think LR has more and better keyboard shortcuts, which increase speed of use.
- Watermarking

HiDPI, is the generic word for a what Apple call Retina, my laptop screen has a resolution of 2560x1440, but is only 13" so to avoid using a magnifying glass Windows is configured to scale everything 200%, the result is a very nice looking very sharp screen with no visible jaggies, however not all software is HiDPI friendly.

There is a whole thread on the Adobe forums about it for Photoshop and the issue only got partly resolved last week.

Unfortunately DPP is also not HiDPI friendly, either v3 or v4.

I have attached a screenshot of Photoshop CC and Photoshop CC 2014 on a HiDPI screen to show you what I mean.

Then it fixes the highlights bug, but adds a shadows bug, that is, it eats a lot of shadows, as the black level is set internally higher than the old version.

Do you have a sample ?

Thanks for insights. I'm a hobbyist with some nice toys and I love to tinker. I'll have to give DPP a serious look.

BTW, have you ever looked at Perfect Photo Suite? It has some really nice presets for doing photo enhancements, layers and masks, and an excellent tool for making enlargements. They say you can up-size to any size without loss of detail. I've used it up to 20 x 30 and I've been impressed with the results.

I haven't tried that. I have LR, PS, DPP, that's enough. The statement in bold above is really quite empty when you think about it. Sure you're not going lose detail. Any tool that destroys detail isn't worth selling or using. But you're never going to gain the detail that might be required to make a huge print look good!

Perfect Effects is free at the moment: http://www.ononesoftware.com/products/effects8free/ (external link) You might find it a pleasant surprise.
