The story starts in Paris about three years ago, with my 5D Mark II. We bought some crêpes from a street vendor and mine was spread with butter, sugar, and lemon juice then rolled like a burrito in a paper wrapper. As we walked and ate, I began to notice that the now syrupy contents was spilling out the bottom of the crêpe and pouring all over my camera.

Luckily, there was a public fountain nearby and all I could do was repeatedly dunk my camera and wipe off the syrup.

There were two significant long-term damages. First off all of the buttons on the top right (ISO selection, mode selection, etc.) would stick in the down position when pressed. They would what they were supposed to do it’s just that they would take a couple minutes to pop back up.

The other damage, was that the camea would randomly lose its focus after the AF beeped. It would snap into focus, then beep, and then before I got the shutter pressed all the way it would try to find the focus again. This resulted in more than half of my shots being out of focus, which meant I have been manually focusing since then.

Recently, I took it to the Canon service center in Irvine, they said $250 to open it up and diagnose the problem, but based on symptoms they estimated about a thousand dollars in total repair cost. Basically, it would cost as much to fix the camera as it would be worth for sale after repair. If I tried to sell it on eBay as is, disclosing these problems, I expected at the most $100 or $200 for it, assuming I got any bids at all.

Flash forward to last week. Get the advertisement in a local camera store and they are having a no tax sale. Furthermore, they say they buy old cameras. I had no illusions as to the value of my Mark II, but I brought it with me, assuming that it couldn’t hurt to take it.

I told the guy I wanted to trade in my old Mark II for credit towards Mark III, he got the manager, who took a look at the camera, fired off a couple of exposures, and most importantly, he did not ask me anything about the condition or operation of the camera. All he said was, “We can give you $800 for it.” Stunned silence on my part.

So I bought the new Mark III. I’ve also wanted a wide-angle zoom, so I got the f/4 17 to 40 L.

Mark III Body...............$3399.00
17 to 40 lens...............$839.00
Tax...............$339.04

Subtotal...............$4577.04 (Yikes!)

Mark II credit...............$800.00
Sales tax credit............... $339.04
Camera rebate...............$200.00
Lens rebate...............$100.00

Final cost...............$3138.00

Discount...............$1439.04

Needless to say, I’m pretty thrilled. Furthermore, I just love having a camera that can focus.

So, I am gone shooting...

Rad

Pity the poor soul who purchases a certain "lightly used" 5D Mark II.

It's a good thing they have a repair shop on site!

Well, that was a great deal, but I'm not sure I'm 100% okay with the shady side of your exchange.
That said, I don't know if I would have responded any differently at the time.

Well, if the exchange was "no questions asked", and then if they offer some kind of warranty for those buying the used camera, I suppose the shop can take up the "slack" and Rad shouldn't feel "responsible"...of course, looking at things from his viewpoint!:)

Yeah, if I was selling on EBay or similar - in other words - photographer to photographer, I would have well documented the problems.

In this case, it was photographer to professional camera dealer. If he would have even asked, "Any problems with it?", I would have told him. Instead, he just took it out of my hands, looked it over, click, chimp, click, chimp, and said "$800".

My guess is that they assume that the incoming cameras take a trip though the repair shop to prep for resale and that problems are fixed as just part of doing business.

I'm with you on this one. Can't say if I'd do differently or not but it seems effed up for the poor soul buying that camera. Oh well. :-)

I agree with all of the above. If the dealer doesn't ask, and just takes a couple shots then gives you an offer, it's on him. Any problems down the road are between him and any potential buyer. Anyway, I guess your post wasn't meant to elicit judgements on the morality of it one way or the other. Congrats on the gear! :D

Well, gosh, if I had the finances I certainly would have jumped on the deal!

As it is, I'm pretty happy that a few weeks ago I was in a second-hand electronics shop and in a box full of stuff there was a little old pocket/compact camera. The shop manager cut down his original "offer" to $5, so I walked out with it, and put batteries and one of my old SD cards in it, and it works, my new "toy"!

Disclosure in sales is such a grey area.
If it was a camera shop that you have a longstanding relationship with, your next visit may receive a cool reception.
On the otherhand, a used car salesman will say anything and withhold everything to make a sale.
It really is "Buyer beware."

This. And I also don't know how I would have responded, so I'm not throwing stones- just don't know how I feel about the transaction, and then the advertising of it. Maybe awkward is the word I'm searching for.

I will say I was wondering what the heck it was about crepes from a street vendor in Paris? Why the heck should I care what you bought for food where, and how it was prepared. I thought maybe you were an author-wannabe and was trying to set the mood or something.

then I got to the part with the camera, and I was Oooooh, Okay, I get it now!
