Hey...I would just like a place to share my photos online...somewhere that other people could see them and post comments or hopefully follow. I don't need to display metadata and the images don't need to be massive resolution.

Is facebook used by people as a photo display forum? Or is it just terrible?

I have a photobucket page but it's riddled with ads and isn't really a clean presentation place where say like minded photographers may stumble on my pics. (I like to shoot street and landscape and abstracty stuff in Hong Kong)

I have Picasa but don't really know much about it or if other random people can 'stumble' onto my stuff.

Dunno even if that is possible in flickr or fb. I suppose some kind of sharing/ promotion helps.

I don't want to sell photos or anything like that. I just simply want to share them.

What's the best online option?

Thanks

I would not trust Facebook as a photo gallery, they change code and terms too often.

Flickr and 500px seems to be most "durable" and have fast servers. Check also ipernity out.

Ok thanks a lot. My problem with flickr is I don't want to get so involved with yahoo. Does yahoo try to take over your life and pc when you sign up for yahoo email? (Which I have heard is what you need to do to join flickr)

A lot of things you download like Adobe Flash or whatever always try to force yahoo toolbars and yahoo this or that down your throat. I don't even want a yahoo email. I don't want to touch yahoo with a ten foot tripod. Thanks for the advice about "people" though. I'll watch out for them. They sound ****.

I use Flickr, and have no issue having a Yahoo email account which I never use. No big deal.

Facebook is so full of dreck that any feedback you get has to be tempered by the fact that practically any photo can garner lots of likes. Its the social currency there and is often done less as an actual comment on quality and more as a form of acknowledgement.

I like Flickr's user interface and sharing the best, but if feedback is what you want, 500px seems to be better. I share on both, for those reasons.

Feedback, however, is generally in the forms of likes, favorites or positive comments. If you're looking for honest feedback from every side, I'd upload to Flickr, then post in the critique corner section of this very forum.

Why don't you just test both?

If you're looking to simply "share" your photos, why not post to both and see which platform gets you the most engagement?

Depends on what kind of photography, but I'd think you'd have more success sharing them on Facebook.
Could also utilize Facebook tabs to create customized photo galleries with additional functionality.

Thanks for the feedback. Noone likes Picasa huh?

I'll probably just jump over my fear of yahoo and sign up for an email there and join Flickr...

I don't have a personal Facebook account either...so it's nice to hear plenty of Facebook bashing too...I won't go that route.

Just say no to Facebook. ;)

I personally don't know what the fear is with Yahoo!. I have no interaction with Yahoo! at all outside of Flickr, and really, for all the interaction I have with Yahoo! through Flickr they might as well not exist. I post at Flickr and 500px, but for sharing on forums Flickr is better; 500px doesn't even offer a BBCode embed option .

Do you have a target audience?

Other than simply sharing your pictures, do you have any other intentions?

What type of pictures do you shoot?

The answers to these questions would dictate my answer.

If I was simply seeking critique and sharing with other photographers, I would probably use Flickr or simply use the Critique section here on the forum. If I was a portrait photographer, looking to start/expand my business and clientele, I would post to Facebook.

Those questions are pretty much all answered in post #1 drvnbysound

Thanks for your advice.

I'm gonna go with Flickr

Why not use both?

I use Facebook because it appeals to a broader audience, and as such, I'm 'touching' more people when I post to Facebook. In that regard, its awesome as a marketing tool (not really relevant to you though). The downside is that most people on Facebook don't know a thing about photography.....its too easy to impress people by simply shooting with a wide aperture lens and blurring out the background. While its awesome for inflating your ego, it doesn't do a whole lot if you're looking to improve your craft.

Flickr/500px is appealing because you're sharing your stuff amongst a community of photographers, so the feedback is more meaningful. It also exposes you to the work of legitimately skilled photographers. As such, you will perpetually think you suck, but will learn a lot in the process.
