moved from "Events". Not sure if this is the right forum.

From three weeks ago - 6th grade Dr. Suess play.

I'm blown away at what a difference a monopod + prime lens made!

No flash photography. Canon 85mm, 5Dii, no flash, Monopod, all ISO 1600.

f4.0, 1/160

Looks like you had a quick shutter... was it very bright inside?

They had 2 spotlights + six or eight 75W canned lights over the stage; otherwise lights-out.

Not loads of light; but enough. Better than an event that lacks a spot - such as the actual graduation ceremony. f4.5 was pushing it at ISO 1600. The f2.0 shots were cleaner, usually allowing about 1/160 or above, but lacked the DOF desired for the school graduation slideshow.

Thanks!

I've been shooting these events for my daughter's school for 5 years now and I have to say it all came together on this one.

  • Front & center seat
  • Monopod
  • Lens selection
  • Timing for ambient light (embracing no-flash)
  • FF camera choice
  • ISO 1600 - nice balance between quality and speed.
  • Mostly on Manual to avoid mis-queues in exposure sensing and shutter delay
  • Mostly f4.0 or above to allow manual focus on many
  • And ... 5 years of experience for the same stage in similar setting
I also had a 7D on a tripod (taped to floor in front of me) with release lever. It had UWA lens on manual focus for front center stage at f5.6 or above, SS about 1/40 or on AV mode (also no flash). I'd hold the release in my left hand, same hand for balancing the monopod. I'd just click it periodically in moments when everyone was still. It also produced some very nice results.
