In this video two Photographers, one model,
one location and one hour.

On top of that...

It is an Einstein vs a bare Canon Speed light.

Check out the results...

since when Canon speedlite called a BARE ???

is it barebulb now like Quantum or Godox ?

I don't think it's a good match puts a monolight against small speedlite

EOS 70D x 2 units + EOS 7D mark II x3 units
Newton FR3, Newton modified bracket, EF 17-40mm x4,EF 24-70mm f/2.8 x2, EF 70-200mm f/2.8 x2
Quantum Trio x2, T5D-R x1 + FW7Q x1, CoPilot x2, Godox AD-180 x5
Propac PB960 head x12, PB960 battery x10

It was a Photo challenge.

The speed light without a modifier is
what Tim decided to use.

I don't think there is any right way to do
anything.

It just shows that different Photographers
have different ways of lighting the same scene.

I am sure some people prefer a larger modifier
and a studio strobe and some people prefer a
Speed light.

the term "bare speed light" makes perfect sense. A speed light with no modifier.

no conclusions were drawn to which is better, it is simply a good comparison between two different ways of using lights. They even put this in the description "There is no, one way to approach this scene and I think you'll enjoy our use of flash and ambient light."

Thanks for posting Craig. Did either of you use a ND filter?

Hey,

Yeah, I used a B+W 3 stop ND filter at the water location
with the 70-200 f2.8.

I think I was around F5.6

Before the shoot I just contacted Tim on Facebook
and pitched him the idea of a Photography challenge.

It really opened my eyes to how different people work
and see light.

It looks like we are going to do a Part 2 to this series.

Any ideas of what to include?

I didn't want to make it too boring for the non technical
types on YouTube.

less clothing on the model? :D

the video was a good primer. Maybe getting into the power levels on the Einstein would be helpful to some, and the differences between diffused vs beauty dish type light with no diffuser.

For the speedlight, i bet most users would be interested in bouncing light/reflectors and maybe the power levels there too. I imagine the speed light was up around 1/1 while the Einstein was cut way back. Folks might find that useful.

off topic a bit, but one thing i have been looking for is a good comparison of brackets for speedlights, small bare bulb lights and monolights etc. I've always just used speedlights but find myself needing more power and want to step up to the Cheetah 360. I can't afford to get stuck with equipment that only works with one kind of light or needs a two hundred dollar rig to mount another light.
