So right now all my lenses and body are on top of the dresser... that belongs to my wife. Next to the dresser is a my camera bag with other things; cords, triggers, cleaning stuff, etc.. There is an umbrella half sticking out from under the dresser. A 50" reflector underneath the backpack to keep it from popping up if I bump it sometime. The battery charger underneath my night stand, and a tripod leaning up against the plant stand in the corner.

Besides taking pictures, I am a hobbyist woodworker. I have often though of building a small cabinet that I can put in this space that is right next to the dresser. Well, my wife was doing some cleaning and she says, "Why don't you build a little cabinet and put it right in this space next to my dresser?" Which brings me to here.

Do any of you have a dedicated cabinet for all of your gear in the house or office? Is is something that you have built yourself or some thing that you have bought? How big is it? And more importantly, do you have any pictures of it?

What I am looking for here are just a few examples of what others might be using to guide me in my design process..This is going to be in my bedroom so I want it to look nice and fit in with the other pieces in the room. This will be floor standing with doors and maybe a lock. Maybe some drawers. I think I will also incorporate a charging station for batteries and iDevices.

Most of all, I really love woodworking and am looking for a great project to help me get back into the shop after a bit of a hiatus since my son was born last year. And I really like to see pictures of what maybe others her have built. Thanks for any input that you can provide.

Most of my stuff is in two drawers of a file cabinet. I found a Pelican padded divider insert that fits the drawer almost perfectly. My lenses live there. The second drawer is for accessories. I wish I had a larger number of smaller drawers since the accessory drawer is poorly organized. The bigger stuff like light stands, umbrellas, tripod, etc are leaning against the file cabinet or piled up next to it.

Since you currently don't have a dedicated place for your camera gear, and you mentioned you wanted a reason to get back in the shop, I can't think of a better reason to make a nice home for your stuff.

Currently all my stuff lives on a shelf in my safe. Seems to work fine for my purposes.

Please post pics if you do decide to make one.

I also use two drawers in a file cabinet. One drawer holds an F-Stop XL ICU (which is a perfect fit in the drawer) which holds my camera bodies and lenses. All my accessories are in the second drawer. The nice thing is that it is an older file cabinet with a locking steel bar that runs down the face of the cabinet so I feel my stuff is reasonably safe.

If you build a cabinet include some way to lock it, not only for security but for when your baby gets older and is getting into everything.

So - there are still at least two trusting people in this world! I keep my most of my cameras and lenses in a safe. I worked hard to get them and if anyone wants to steal them they can work equally hard (or preferably a lot harder). I'm darned if I'll make it easy for them even though a nice glass fronted oak display case would be more æsthetically pleasing.

Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!

I have mine on my shelf in my living room. I will be building my desk soon (computer desk out of old 4cyl engines) and will then have them on a shelf in the spare bedroom/office. Interested to see what you come up with.

I have a stack of milk boxes for the stuff I don't use as often. The stuff I use often is in a closet in lowepro bags. The tripods and a monopod are collecting dust under the drawer.

Mine's in a safe but if that's not feasible I've had good experience with THIS (external link) for accessories and related items.
Of course I'm not particularly gifted in the custom built cabinet dept.

I keep all my cameras, speedlights and lenses in my gun safe which is located in my family room.

For all of the accessory gear like batteries, cords, triggers, and the like I built a small cabinet with sectioned drawers to store them in. I don't have any photos right now with the drawers loaded but I think you get the idea. The last shot shows it with my 6D on top to show scale.

It works very well when I am packing up for a shoot, as I can go through each drawer and easily see what I should be taking with me.

It is on wheels, but normally resides in my home office closet with the rest of my lighting gear, bags, etc.

i don't think its very safe to display your camera gear so that others may see it,i always keep mine away and lock it up when not in use.

Who has access to your house that you think might steal your gear?

Did you build this from scratch? I like this, but have no woodworking skills. I wonder if I could convert a wooden 3 drawer file cabinet or something like that.

Wow!!!... This is some good stuff. Mainbyte, that is beautiful. I like what you have done with the drawers there. I am thinking maybe something like that as well. I think that I may make them adjustable so that I can move them or possible change this aroung as the glass collection changes.

Whorttleberry, I do plan on putting a lock on it. I ma also thing about securing it to the wall. I have two little ones and you never know what the future holds for more, I would hate to see it pulled over.

I do want to get a gun safe eventually, maybe that will be long term or away storage. Keep all my goodies in one place. Guns and cameras.. Good combo. Thanks All!!

I purchased this from Ikea. My wife put it together for me. It works very well. And they have many other configurations. This slides out on wheels and also has a combination lock to keep out the curious.
