Now that Sony has changed the game with their 36MP A7R Full Frame Mirrorless camera, will Canon follow suit. Or will they keep assuming (wrongly so) that professionals aren't that interested in mirrorless?

Will they ever make a decent mirrorless, let's start there first.

Heya,

I'm gonna go with "yes."

The market will eventually go mirrorless.

But give it time. These are the first few generations of these things. Eventually they will be better, mass produced more, and 4th and 5th generation and the problems worked out.

I could care less about 36MP vs 18MP. If you're printing an 8x10, it's not going to look different. And frankly, there's plenty of posters and billboards out there with high quality prints that came out of a 13MP 5D. You just don't need massive MP.

Very best,

 I made the mistake of viewing your post while taking a sip from my drink. Fortunately I had just enough self-control to avoid an embarrassing scene at the office.

If Canon made a mirrorless with DSLR ergonomics, awesome AF, and an EVF superior to an OVF, I'd buy one. Call it the 5D-M.

But give it time.

What do you mean "give it time?" Canon could have come out with the first full frame mirrorless, but they chose not to. How will giving Canon "more time" to improve upon a design they haven't even begun to develop ever going to get a "worthy" Canon mirrorrless on the market? I suspect Canon doesn't believe that professionals will buy into the mirrorless concept; otherwise, they would get going pronto. But no, they let Sony take the lead. Granted the mirrorless technology is in its infancy, but what is Canon waiting for? Do they plan to buy out the Sony mirrorless line after Sony perfects it? I don't think so. In this industry, there are leaders and there are followers. Sony has stepped up to the plate as a leader with the mirrorless platform. Message to Canon, if you ever want me to upgrade my Canon 5D Mark II to a bigger and better (or smaller and better, if you will) Canon camera, then you better get on the ball, because my next purchase will be a full frame mirrorless.

I thought the EOS-M was fine, price point was poor. Since sensor size is doubled, a FF M for double the price seems fair.... i'de definitely go for that.

That damn touch screen is nice, would love something like that for landscapes. Optional EVF would be cool too.

IMO, M + 6D sensor for 1K, would sell like hotcakes.

I've played with the EOS-M a few times now and it is fine when looking at it alone. But bring the other players into the picture and the EOS-M looks pretty sad. Canon clearly in the US has not made mirrorless a priority or even made a statement that they want to become players in the mirrorless market.

And then ask if they'll ever develop a decent sensor, instead of re-hashing the same ones year over year.

Canon is going to have to release a full-frame mirrorless camera at some point in the future, as that's the direction the industry is headed. It's more a question of "when" than a question of "if". I seriously wonder if they'll respond in time to capitalize on changing market trends, as Sony has built a pretty big lead over Canon in the mirrorless segment.

If Canon ever released a full frame mirrorless camera with a sensor that meets or beats Sony's exmore, I'd buy it the day it hit the market. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for them though... Their half-assed attempt with the EOS-M shows how uncommitted they are to the mirrorless format.

I've played with the A7r and M only, and the A7r has serious AF issues, couldnt find an easy way to select a point. Other than that, the dual controls and EVF is nice. The M only has one control, but using it is much more fluid than sony's system. I'de prefer the sony sensor inside of the M.

Not everyone needs a viewfinder, and I feel the M is marketed towards that group, and should be priced accordingly. It would be a pretty sweet camera if it had peaking, wifi/gps, and a larger sensor. Olympus seems like the best body, but smallest sensor.

If canon wasn't comitted to mirrorless, we wouldn't see the dual pixel af that came out in the 70D. I suspect there will eb an eos-M iii that will have another crop sensor with dual pixel af,l. The lenses might be a problem because canon is committed to the ef mount so heavily. An ef to ff mirrorless mount would be possible, but it removes some of the attractiveness of a small camera. And if you don't want a small camera, then the problems get much easier. But then why mirrorless?

My guess is that the 7d mark 2 will use dual pixel in a new high DR sensor tech. It would be awesome to see that in the next M camera.

I don't think that the dual pixel design gives a mirrorless camera any advantage. It seems to be strictly a feature to improve video focus performance.

Also, I can see a EOS-M-III happening and it will most likely not be sold in the states unless Canon does a serious market assessment to see how their product competes with it's competitors and not itself.

Yes.

Video cameras are generally mirrorless. When action cameras and video cameras merge in a few years' time, they'll be mirrorless.

Non-action cameras have no reason to have a mirror in the first place.
