I bought a bag full of old camera stuff for a whopping $20, mainly for the couple of MF Minolta lenses, and among all the miscellaneous stuff there was a Hoya 67mm NDX4 filter in perfect shape.

So, what do I use it for ;) ? I know the idea is to lower the light by 2 stops, but I can't think of many scenarios other than running water in bright light. I wish it was a GND. Anyway, any cool ways to use this ?

I like to use my ND filter when shooting in a crowded area during the day to blur out the people (sometimes I pop on my CPL to make it darker). You can also use on landscapes it during the day to smooth out the sky a little. I never use a GND since you can shoot in raw and use the GND tool in lightroom.

A two-stop ND? It'll let you get a shallower DoF and/or slower shutter speed than you might otherwise even at lowest ISO setting. For instance, you might be outside doing portraits and want to use fill flash; 2 stops might be what you need for a shallow DoF while remaining within flash sync speed limits. As drumsfield said, you can add a CPL to the ND for a bit more light attenuation.

i use my ndx4 with my 135L when I want to strobe and I don't have HSS.

I also stack it with other ND filter's sometimes. It's a good small one to add.

you definitely got it for a steal if you that was in a bunch of random stuff for $20!

I didn't realize how creative the mix of ND and strobe could be . . .
