Hi John. Welcome. I love redpolls too. Got lots of them where I am. Great subjects — though small, they are not shy, so close is easy to achieve. This has nice composition. Did you shoot through a window? It seems to my eye like there's a light haziness over the subject that I've noticed before when shooting through windows.

This is a curious and delightful winter finch that just loves to be photographed. Composition is first rate...but the photo itself could use a bit more contrast to rid of the "haziness".

:) Thanks for the kind words guys...
It's great to have found this site. There seems to be tons of help and information available here and boy will I need it!

RW...no special program, just done in photoshop by hand.

Steve...yes you're right!!! Very very good eye! I thought it was a little hazey myself. I had just received my new Canon 350D and was all fired up to shoot something. We'll call it a learning experience.:)

John, those redpolls are quite tolerant of people. I've had good luck sitting very still be my feeders, and they'll often come to within 10 or 15 feet. Don't even need the 600mm f4 then! :) :)

These are wonderful liitle visitors in the Winter months. They are considered to be an arctic bird and those that do stay in the coldest parts of the north are known to tunnel into the snow to help insulate them while they sleep (on the coldest of nights). I have had them in my yard where they will not allow me to approach. At a trail not 10 kilometers from my door I was within 3 feet of a dozen or more Redpolls from a flock of 50 :D and they just were just more intersested in the food someone had put out than in my presence.

I like the composition of the photo and the pose on the bird. The shot is a little flat and could use more contrast to help it pop. Welcome to the Forum and looking forward to more:D
