Using an RCA-cable-connected external TV monitor with the 10D, one can obtain rough composition previews using the 10D. I asssume that the same would also apply if the 10D were connected via RCA cable to a PC through a video card?

But here's my question: other than these two options, or the use of a test shot with "Remote Capture" (which does not square with my definition of the word "preview") is there any useful way to use a PC laptop/XP Pro environment for previews?

JATO, thanks. It's not exactly a preview but it's a very good idea. I plan to check it out.

xdiii,
To get video into you laptop from the 10D you can use a PCMCIA vedio capture card. The problem is they are not cheap. I used to have one made by a company called Nogatech I believe the PCMCIA version has been discontinued. I think they now make a USB version.
My 4 year old PCMICA version quit working. I replaced it with an X10 unit. While the resolution is not as good as the PCMCIA card I had, it suits my needs.

The CMOS will not offer a preview like many other digicams do simply because it is an SLR,. light only hits the CMOS with the opening of the shutter. That uis the same reason why you can not get an inmage on the built in LCD untill the photo is taken.

Remote capture is the simplet option. Nothing to buy or install,. you just have to tweek untill you get it in focus,. I guess the DSLR focus can help you do that,. but it is really doing the same thing as remote capture.
