I've heard people say that before but none of my other lenses exhibit it. Also being a hobby photographer if I'm paying that much for a single focal length I kinda want to be able to focus at any distance not just my usual distance for that lens. Looks like the 50L is not for me, lesson learned

I too am an enthusiast making no money from this.

Having dug deeper into this I now think the problem is the 50 1.2 has no floating lens element.
My 85 1.2 has a FLE and therefore corrects the problem at all apertures and focal lengths.

At least that's how I understand it.

All that said, it sounds like your copy hits nothing at any distance or any aperture. Can I ask where you bought it?

That's not what I said. It nails focus at close range, it just misses at distance.

Sorry.

Anyway, this is an interesting article worth a read.

No worries.

By all accounts and in summary, focus shift is only really noticeable at close range focussing.
The problem I have is that I really like the safety shift feature on my 6D but it picks an aperture, in bright conditions, that is correct for the shutter speed.
Sadly, this is invariably somewhere between F2.0 and F4.0.

I am still musing as to whether or not I can live with this limitation.

Have you tried changing safety shift to ISO?

I did muse that but the lens lets in so much light I'm already shooting at ISO 100/50 in sunlight.

I have a feeling I'll be taking it back to the London camera exchange and getting something else.
At £1049 it's a mighty expensive bit of kit to be having to find a workaround.

The thing that saddens me the most is, this lens was a dream of mine for many years.

I shoot in AV mode 99% of the time. Unless I want a specific shutter speed. (TV)
While I do stop my lens down as desired, I purchased an ND filter to compensation for my 50L
The 6D has a limitation of 1/4000 SS unlike other cameras that offer 1/8000

I would recommend trying the lens in AV mode to ensure you are as either f1.2 or f2.0+
to minimize the focal shift issue.
Getting an ND8 multicoated filters gives you three stops on light blocking.
Even up to 1600 ISO the 6D performs great.

Best of luck to you.

Any Suggestions? Should a Micro Adjust a Different way? Could it be the Camera since my results on both lenses were -24?

One thing worth checking is the firmware version of your 6D.
The latest iteration solved some sort of focus issue.

Good luck
