I would like to set up a monitor on a 3 axis wireless gimbal. I would like to connect it to my 5d with a wireless receiver.

What setup do you recommend? Which one you don't?

Thanks so much!

Do you mean a 3-axis brushless gimbal? Haven't heard of any wireless monitor setups, so I can't help you with that.

Works fine for dslr since it's HDMI. I'd recommend a cable pinch since HDMI is the worst connection known to man.. it'll fall out if you even look at it wrong, so it'll definitely be susceptible to disconnecting on a movi.

I assume this transmitter is for village/a focus puller?

Good Lord that's cool but expensive. Why would you want to pull a full 1080 feed wirelessly unless you were live streaming though? It would be a waste for any normal field monitor of 720p or less.

The industry standard for this is the Teradek (external link) series. There are some DIY solutions on Youtube that you can look for as well.

You didn't specify the application. If it's not a demanding one, you might be able to use the CamRanger ($300) (external link) plus its compatible motorized tripod head ($230) (external link).

The motors are slow, and the up/down range isn't great. But it's fully integrated into the CamRanger system, which I love. And it's perfect on the second camera I use for my kids' piano recitals.

I was also going to suggest the Camranger, but the $40 DIY version that uses the same exact hardware (A TP-Link MR3040 Wifi router) without the branding. You download a free firmware patch then use an Android device with the DSLRContrller app ($6). the delay is negligible and seems to work very well. I have this setup, but haven't had a chance to test it out very much.

Does the DSLR controller app control the motorized tripod head?

I tried the DSLR controller app and found it to be incredibly buggy, and not worth the hassle.

I have found the CamRanger to be very very very reliable.

Maybe the DSLR controller app has improved, but I didn't have the patience for that.

He's talking about using this just as a transmitter on a Movi-style handheld gimbal, not a pan/tilt head.

Most people go for the Paralinx arrow if their cameras have HDMI out instead of only HD-SDI or composite. OP doesn't actually need a wireless monitor unless he wants someone else to control the pan/tilt of the gimbal.

Just saw this link:

Definitely eliminates the Paralinx Arrow from the running for me. Now it's down to this or the CamRanger...

Well I just learned one limitation of the Nyrius... You cannot broadcast from one transmitter to multiple receivers. At least not natively. You would have to hook the receiver to an HDMI splitter. I believe the Arrow allows for multiple receivers and therefore multiple monitors which is an advantage.

Ok, this is getting interesting the more I research this... Since I'm getting the DJI Ronin it will be very nice to be able to go wireless. Just trying to find a cost effective way to do it while keeping as many options open as I can. Here is my current thinking:

Two step approach

(1) Get a CamRanger that will plug into my usb port on the 5D3. This will allow me to use my iPad that I already have to give to the director/(soon to be assistant focus puller but he doesn't know this yet) to use as a monitor.

Solution: Provides a field monitor for director. Small. Cheap. Long battery life. Great reviews. Can focus with the iPad touch screen when mounted to Ronin without need to touch the camera. Super useful for the still photography that I still do.
Problems: Only one iPad can connect so cannot use this for multiple monitors. Some lag so not ideal for the cinematographer. Not a long term focus pulling solution as eventually I'll want something more controlled and professional to pull focus.

(2) Attach HDMI cable from 5D3 to iKAN field monitor that I already have and mount this on the camera.

Solution: No lag. Already have all equipment needed. Provides a second monitor!
Problems: Not 100% sure I can use these both at the same time, but I did contact CamRanger and they said they are 98% sure this should work.

Ok, I made my decision... went with the WeyeFeye. Here's a quick review I did today if anyone is interested in a setup with a monitor on your camera rig with a second wireless monitor.
