I'm looking for a compact camera that I can use for mostly taking closeup shots of samples and equipment in a research laboratory. I don't want to use my bulky 5D3, also due to security concern. Please recommend which Canon compact is good, taking into account the indoor fluorescent lighting. Thanks for the inputs!

I had a similar problem for my work, needing close ups in Macro and shots of larger equipment in close up.
My solution was the G12 as it gave me the flip out and rotatable screen which I find almost essential for close up macros of benched items rather than the later models such as G15 G16 which I passed on that don't have that facility.
I purchased mine new at the beginning of this year but I guess as an older model they are getting thin on the ground to buy new.

When I first got my G12, I did lots of macro shots using add-on lenses. My favorite one was the Leica Elpro 3. I use a lensmate adapter for it, though they are now out of production. I'm sure you can find something similar on eBay.

You should be able to find a G12 (as above, the flip screen really helps with product and macro shots) used for $150 or so. I saw one here on Craig's list for that price a while back.

The Canon G15 is great for close up shots, with a 1cm macro and because the g16 has been out a while, the G15 can be had new for a good price. If you're taking pictures at odd angles, then as per posts above, the articulating screen of the G12 may be a better fit for you. It also has a 1cm close focus. You might be able to find this new in the States.

Thanks for all the great inputs folks! I will drop by my Canon shop to test out the G1x (Mark 1), G15 and G16. These are the models they have in stock.

I think you will find the mk1 G1x is not very good for close up shots, the G15/16 is ideal.
