I remember similar experiments in the film days and just recently tried it with my 6D. Most of what I got was crap but this one is kind of creepy. It looks like the moment you open your eyes and realize you are booked for a nightmare...

Honestly I was bored....but still is creepy. LOL!

I don't think your pinhole was small enough. With a very small aperture which a pinhole is your DOF should have been nearly infinite.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

The setup is just a normal DLSR cap with a little hole covered by UV glass so is dustless.

Specifications are: f stop, 167

0.3mm pinhole with a thickness of .002”

I added some blurring and effects. I think it needs way more light.

Here is a pic:

BTW, if anyone else has taken some images with this technique feel free to post them!

I thought about it, even have the tools but I preferred to get an already prepared one. With more light it should give interesting effects.

I've wanted to drill a hole in one of my caps, but I'm worried about what would happen if it was off center. Does anyone know?

That's was another thing that worried me, how to get the exact center.

Cut a square out of a pop can, take a straight pin, and tap it through the aluminum. Just as it breaks through, take emery paper and sand the "nipple" down just a tad. This should produce a very small hole. Drill a larger hole in a body cap, then tape the "aperture plate" you just made on the inside of the body cap to look through that hole in the body cap.

Exact centre is not that critical! The pinhole doesn't know where the sensor is:D

Here is my old experiment. The problem with pinhole is that you get very low resolution with DSLR sensors. You need something much bigger (like large format film camera) to get a decent sharpness.

Brian,

I really, really like your pinhole image.

Someone mentioned something about how you should have had infinite focus. Well, I think the image is much better the way it is than it would be if the foliage was crisp and sharp. In fact, your same image, with tack-sharp focus, would pretty much be a throw-away image, in my opinion. But your pinhole rendered the foliage so softly, which resulted in a really cool "mood image".

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".
