Nice shots. Be careful with the sun breaking through the trees. It's casting a harsh light on her face in the first picture, different color tones and also she's struggling to keep her eye open so it makes her face contorted some.

the spotty light is too distracting

And yes, the light was not perfect....it was at 11 - 12 o'clock and a very hard light.

Maybe it's because I'm on a tablet but I'm really liking the composition of each photo but feel that they're missing "pop" and "punch" as far as color/saturation. Is the desaturation of colors the look you're going for?

yes you are right! Do you mean contrast with "pop" and "punch"?
Then yes, because I set the contrast in CameraRaw to -20....and also the color and saturation I tryed to reduce in different steps.
Maybe a "mistake"....
Especially the thing with color and saturation is "my style"...mostly I don't like pictures which have a "high" saturation.
In the last weeks I tried to create "my own style"..."a bright style"....but I'm still on my way to find a satisfying solution

As others have said, the hot spots from the sun peaking through the leaves is causing for some unflattering skin tones. Instead of choosing locations because you like the background, find good light for your subjects first, and then decide on the best focal length and aperture to reduce background clutter or distractions.
