The sunspots have been pretty sparse during this solar maximum. A few freckles popped up over the past few days, so I thought I'd take a shot.

Canon 7D / EF 100-400L lens / Home made Baader Safety Film filter / EXIF attached

Nice capture Jim! They do look good at the moment, don't they?

For some reason your sun is upside down. Oh wait.. It's where we were standing :) :) Good shot!

Did you colour your image at all? My Baader film filter produces white images.

Isn't that the big dipper? Haha ... Nice spots. They are massive!


2x 50d: with 17-85mm f4-5.6, 100mm Macro USM, 50mm f1.8, 2x Sigma 30mm f1.4, 55-250mm (kit lens), Canon 100-400mm L, Tamron 200-400mm f5.6, Samyang 8mm. 480mm refactor with HEQ5. Home made beamsplitter stereo rig.

$30 for an A4 sheet

Nice shot, lots of spots!

Wondering what kind of lens should I use for sun, will my Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 + 1.4x tc be enough (approx. 420mm)? How much do you need to crop it?

That will work. I'm using an EF 100-400L at 400mm.

For a size reference of what to expect, my captured images of the sun are about the same size as my 400mm images of the moon. So, look at your moon shots and that's about the size you can expect.
