Then you don't spend much time configuring PCs. They even removed some wifi stuff from the UI completely, requiring netsh commands instead. How's that for user friendly?

I've configured plenty but haven't found anything that's metro only yet, that I can recall. I'd be curious what you've found but it's not really relevant to this thread.

As with anything, it will depend on what you're doing, so my original response to you could have started better to convey my experience with 8.

Hey Gene.

Been curious about these Surface Pros...I'm wondering, have you used yours for photo download from the camera and editing?
Does it run LR or similar? If so, what is your experience there?

I am currently an iPad user and have found it a bit awkward to download my photos after a shoot, from camera to the iPad directly. It's doable though (I use the wifi on the 6D and the Canon app).

Just curious about your experience.

Dean,

Working with the Surface Pro 3 is just like working with any other laptop except I like the colors and resolution better on the Surface than my last Dell 15" laptop.

For the fun of it, I took a shot of my set up, uploaded the image to my external HDD via a card reader. I have a usb hub connecting the reader and drive to the Surface. The raw image came up in Bridge whereupon I opened it in PS CC 2014, did some quick editing, resized and saved a jpg. Still using the Surface, I uploaded the jpg to my Flickr page, typed out this reply and posted. If the white balance is off, it's due to the colors in my kitchen and the overhead fluorescent lights.

Speed of editing the image was not an issue. I'm using the i5 processor with 8gb of ram btw.

Awesome! I've been debating getting something with windows 7 but now after this thread, I think I'll probably just go with 8.1

Here's what my start menu looks like using StartIsBack+ ($3). Exactly like Win 7.

Maybe it's time to bring back DOS. Start a hipster trend.

I used to write utilities and games using Basic for my Commodore 64. Actually, I copied the code from magazines...but I did write it...no copy/paste from a magazine. :D

My first computer programming was done like that with an Atari, writing in assembly language games from a magazine!

OMG!! I do remember when magazines would include fun little apps code in print. Would diligently type it in, debug it when it didn't work, then modify it to make it better. AH!! the good ol' days.

Hey, I fondly recall those years with DIBOL 8 on a DEC PDP8, with upgrade to dual 80K floppies and 16K RAM! My programs ran multi-million $$ companies. VI on Green Screen rocks!

This whole GUI revolution just sucks. I'm *glad* Windows 8 expects everyone to just remember commands again - menus are for wimps! I was missing the mental gymnastics too; having the screens magically disappear is a refreshing source of stimulation.

Back to topic: I think I need to get over the initial flop of 8.0 and give 8.1 another chance. I shouldn't be handing out advice on something I haven't really given more than a cursory try. Apparently, Microsoft actually listened (how could they not hear that uproar) and fixed the main problem.

There are a couple of updates coming for Windows 8.1 too with the earliest possibly this fall for Win 8.2 and Windows version 9 next year.

The word is though that a group within Microsoft is working on a Windows Cloud prototype. Similar to Office 365 (and Adobe CC) where users download the software for free and pay a monthly subscription, Windows Cloud will have a similar setup.

I find the trick to Windows 8 is to remove EVERY SINGLE tile from the non-sense start page (Except for the desk top tile) and then install the software you want. New tiles get created for the new installed software.

Now when Windows opens with the non-sense page you only have the tiles for what you want to use and not what Microsoft wants you to use. I find I kind of like this method now!

When all software is on the cloud I will have three lap tops for sale !!! :)

This sounds a lot like cloud based Thin Client.

I can just picture Microsoft execs dreaming of every individual and employee in the modern world handing them $60/yr just to have Windows enabled, another $100 for Office 365.

Hey, it would cut down on International bootlegging - and maybe mitigate Virus damage.

If that scenario ever comes to pass, my computer just might wind up in the cloud...or at least as close to it as I can throw it!
