My 40d (maybe 35k clicks) just ran into an issue. As it sits, the mirror will not flip down and the sensor "screen" will not rise. However, if I click it over the live-view, the camera works just fine..

Does this make any sense? It may have happen when I was cleaning the sensor. It's possible I forgot to turn the camera OFF when I was finished with the job, but I'm not certain.

It doesn't show any error codes or any other fault signs. I've cleared all settings and made sure it's not in any sort of custom mode. I'd appreciate any help or guidance!

TIA!

Sound like "mirror lockup" is enabled.

Checked in the settings.. turned off. Unless there is another hidden somewhere I'm not aware of.

And I don't commonly use mirror lock up - but wouldn't the viewfinder/shutter still work? Currently I just see black when using the viewfinder. Live view works as normal..

Have you tried pressing the shutter button a second time... Once to lift the mirror and a second push to see if the shutter (what you call a screen) opens up?

If the mirror is flipped up, no. The viewfinder would be black because the mirror would then be blocking the image's path to the viewfinder... Which is what happens every time you take a photo whether in MLU or not.

If in MLU, the shutter requires a second button push to open.

I wish it were mlu! I don't think it is.. Tried numerous hits on the shutter and reset/cleared all functions several times as well.

Very odd.. Thanks for the help so far.

Try removing both the "main" battery and the date/time battery, let it sit for a while, turn the Off/On switch on and off, various things to get the camera to "clear" any weird settings, then put things back and try. The manual does specify to turn off the camera after doing the sensor cleaning, but no telling what weird stuff can happen if you don't!

Please be advised that returning the camera to factory defaults is a two-step procedure. Both steps must be performed in separate actions in order to completely reset the camera.

No.. Sadly not. I appreciate you following up.

I've reset it numerous times. Pulled all batteries and the internal battery during my work day today. It fired up, asked for date and time but worked the same.

It works fully but only w live view in manual focus. External flash and battery grip works fine..

I have a house to shoot tomorrow and hoping it gets through it...

Ah. A battery grip. I know that you are going to think that I am crazy, but battery grips are usually the culprit when something unexplained is going on with a camera, whether the battery grip is Canon or not.

Have you taken the battery grip off and tried it that way. Even if you think I am crazy, humor me.

I did actually! Took it off when I got home today after the long reset hoping it would make a difference. No such luck!

I'm worried I may have poked a safety switch or something internally when I was cleaning the sensor. I was in the field and it probably wasn't my most "gentle" go at it. (Though I've always been a believer that the sensor certainly is much more durable than it's given credit for).

Unfortunately probably not worth the dough to send this into canon considering its going rate in the used market.

Well, I hate that. I'd hoped you had got it worked out.

Thanks again! Appreciate the follow up. Was hoping it was something simple.. But no luck!

Will shoot in live view for a little while (just landscapes and architecture) , and will have to upgrade to a 7d once I get back into shooting people and moving objects!
