Poor Woody

Next door to our house there is a vacant property that had a dead palm tree in front of it. A pair of Red-Bellied Woodpeckers fought off Starlings for a month to build their nest. Last year the Starlings took over and kicked them out of another spot on the same tree. This year the Woodpeckers prevailed.........only to have a storm knock over the whole tree! Inside were several broken eggs. I feel so sorry for this pair as they worked so hard to build this nest. Does anyone know if they can lay another batch of eggs somewhere else this season? I hope so.

Sometimes you just can't win, it seems. Anyway, here's this unlucky pair.
