Found resting on the stone steps leading to my front door. As a night flying moth it lay pretty motionless during the day. I carefully brought it inside and took a series of studio shots using two heavily diffused flashes. Once I had finished photographing I placed the moth in a shaded area of my garden. I was lucky enough to see it warm up by vibrating its wings and then taking off!

Wingspan is approx 5cm with forewing being a lovely olive-brown, overlaid with pink coloration. Notice the darker V-shaped pattern reminiscent of army jungle camouflage. This moth would certainly be difficult to spot when resting on foliage. Luckily for me it was resting on stone steps.

Beautiful moth Alex.

Looks very much like the one I found at the bottom of our recycling bin. I rescued him but no shots. I do wonder how he got in there, the lid closes tight.

Thanks for all the comments, much appreciated. I think moths can be every bit as beautiful as butterflies, but let's be honest with their numbers dominating the Lepidoptera order they are often considered common and boring. I think we would all agree that they are fascinating creatures and anything but boring!
