I came across photos with a red vertical streak effect from time to time. It is often used in random photo of people. The effect is similar to the right photo below:

Does anyone know if this effect came from certain film camera? Trying to understand the history of it and how it was used in the past. Thanks.

Do you think that was done on purpose?

It's been awhile since I messed with film, but it reminds me of when there was light leaks in the camera or while the film was loaded, unloaded or processed.

I don't think it was done on purpose.

I think that's exactly what it is. The left shot has some negative damage top right.

It's become really popular now to add light leaks to photos on purpose. It goes with the whole hipster film thing and the cheap plastic 35mm bodies that are sold at Urban Outfitters.

From film days the first picture generally has something like that when you would try and squeeze one extra picture from a roll so wouldn't wind it a full three times before shooting.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

It came from any and all types of cameras and lenses at the time .. not VERY common, specially with the higher end cameras like Leicaflex .. and even then ..

Anything from user error to dark-room tech ..
