does it make sense to have 2 different size umbrellas? or should one have two umbrellas of equal size? i got a 60" because it can handle a two-person almost full length shot if need be. so should i get another the same size for a second light or the next size down?

It makes sense to me to have two of each so that you can choose your tools when you are doing the setup.

Whether or not it makes sense to use 60" in the first place depends on the space (typically the ceiling height) you have for a "studio" and what kind of shots you are doing with it. I use a 60" umbrella for tabletop work sometimes.

You're right about bigger umbrellas for full lenght shots, because you have more light distribution, and the focus of light is broader. The broader the light, the more softness. Personally, the only reason why I would get a smaller size for headshots, let's say, would be because of bulk or space availability. One good place to have proper advice on this is here:

I've used my 60" umbrella with a light with a 30" umbrella and even with no umbrella. It really depends on the lighting results you are going for. So don't worry about mixing and matching. In fact, the more you play with different lighting modifiers the more you will understand what they do and how they can work together to do what you want.
