I get around 600 full RAW shots on these cards... at $10 a pop, they about double in price for double the size too ($20-32gb, $35-64gb)

http://www.amazon.com …=8-3&keywords=pny+sd+card (external link)

They could be free and the OP can't use them in his 40D. He needs CF cards.

You should be able to get around 800 full size RAW images on an 8Gb CF card from a 40D. Canon RAW files seem to be around 1 Mb per megapixel at least in my experience. You should be able to pick up 8Gb CF cards for under $20 each, probably much less than that.

I didn't even realize the 40D had mRAW.... I'd still just get another memory card or two, aren't RAWs from that camera under 12mp to begin with?

The size of the file is relative to resolution, detail of your subject material, and ISO.

I realize that, but starting off with less MP makes for a smaller file.

Also, these are on sale...

Good brand, good price and good source (Transcend).

Agreed, and at well over 1000 raw images on a 32GB card, why carry the extra weight and messing around with external drives.

More like 3000 images on a 32Gb card using a 40D, depending on conditions.

Years ago I had the same question. I shot sRAW on my trip to the UK and have regretted it ever since. I should have just bought a bigger CF card.

1Dx - 5DIII - 40D - Canon 24-70LII, 100L macro, 135L, 16-35L, 70-200 f4 and 100-400L lenses

- "Very good" is the enemy of "great." Sometimes we confuse the two.

I don't understand spending all that money on gear and not shooting in the highest settings. Just get some extra 8 or 16gb cards. I can get around 1300 RAW on a 32gb card (SD), 900ish if shooting Raw + JPEG. I think you should get extra cards and shoot in max settings. I'm not sure how much extra CF cards are, but it's worth it IMO.

Canon 6D, EF 135f/2L USM, EF 200mm f/2.8 II USM, EF 50mm f\1.4 USM, EF 40mm f\2.8 STM, 430exII speedlite, Flashbender.

Mark...I'm missing something in your request. I use the same system...I get approx 360 full sized raw images on a 4.7 gb dvd. That's about 12 MB per image. A cd is 700 MB, so I recon you should be able to burn at least 50 on a cd.

This really begs the question as to your laptop hardware. It only has cd burner and not dvd burner?

I archive my images to dvd's. The high quality dvd's are $30+-40 per 100. Last time I bought, the high qual cd's were $20-28 per 100 for approx 1/6 the storage capacity.

On your report, 20 inages on 100 cd's is 2000 images. My observation is you should get 50 full rez raw images on a cd..the equivalent of 40 cd's. 2000 of these images on dvd's would be about 6 discs.

Are you saying that your laptop has limited storage or that you want to backup your images?

If your laptop is relatively recent, 1 TB SATA drives range from $60+ to 100 at Amazon (just using them for a price check). That would provide for a large amount of primary image storage.

For secondary storage, you could use usb flash drives…Best Buy (again, price checking only) shows a 64 GB usb 2 drive for $35 on sale today. I’m getting more than 500 images on 8 gb cf’s, so that’s at least 4000 images per stick, about 285 image per day on 14 days. Or you could opt for an external “passport” hard drive…$60-80 for a 1 TB drive. Passport type drives are powered via the usb port on your computer.

Regarding moving files from the laptop to the desktop computer….The faster way would be to connect the 2 computers to a router/switch, set up a small network and share the image folder(s) on the laptop. Then copy the images from the laptop and paste unto the desktop computer ( a folder on the desktop computer!). You should see transfer rates between 40-60 Mbs on a 100 Mbs network.

Alternatively, you can use the usb sticks, but this is 2 copy steps and 2 paste steps on a lower transfer rate via a usb 2 connection.

Hope this helps.

Good luck,
Paul

I am headed to Ecuador in a couple of days. I am bringing a laptop to store my photos. (bird photography) but yesterday I was testing out the logistics of getting photos back to my work computer I noticed that I could only get like 20 shots on a cd and I got to thinking I don't want to go thru 100 cd's to transfer all my images. so the question is if I shoot mraw instead of full raw will I regret it? or is there a way I can plug my laptop into my computer and just transfer the full raw direct? I don't want to spend two weeks in Ecuador shooting pics and find out all my stuff is ruined.

thanks
mark

MRAW means semi-fake raw and a lot less reach which must be critical for birds I'd think, I think you'd regret it a lot, most likely
