1. Mom, I'm HUNGRY! You can see the eye colour here....adult yellow, baby orange.

2. Dad with the bacon........er, flounder.

3. Dad then leaves with the flounder. I've seen this a few times, Dad shows up at the nest with food, sits with it in the nest for a minute, then removes it and heads for a nearby tree to eat the head himself, first.

How do you manage these shots that are not only extremely good, but at or nearly at eye level with the nest. I always seem to have to be shooting straight up by the time I am close enough for a decent shot.

If you get too close, that's what will happen, you'll be looking straight up at them. I was just over 200 feet away, and using a 500mm lens plus a 2X extender, so I was shooting at 1000 mm. That far away, you do seem to be shooting straight at them. This nest is on top of an abandoned railway bridge, so it's maybe 25 feet up from the railbed.

Great series. I can't wait to see those little one get as big as these shots you have here with little ones here, I am talking about the Osprey nest near our house about 5 minutes away. Here is the picture for comparison of the babies. Sorry Ian don't mean to hijack your thread. For just comparison's sake of the babies thanks and I apologized. How long do you think it will take to be as big like what you posted? Few more weeks? Thanks

Thanks Bret. I've heard the story that the males do that because the fish head provides a higher level or protein, which in turn gives them additional energy to go out and keep on fishing and providing for the family.

No trouble, Peter. The young ones grow real fast. The last time I was at this nest, whcih is also about 5 minutes away, the babies were tiny, and I only saw one. This time they're HUGE! So I think a couple of weeks will make the difference show.

Thanks Sandy. Well Mom sure was. The babies are just learning to vocalize and aren't very loud just yet.

Excellent series Ian! Love the story too, didn't realize Dad ate first, but it makes sense that he needs the 'energy'..
