Trying out something new, what do you think?

When I'm in between projects I often like to look at the work of other photographers and try to see if I can reverse engineer how they create an image. Here is my attempt at doing that with the amazing series of photographer Sam Hurd titled "Epic Portraits". C&C welcome.

Had a look at his epic portrait series. Makes me wonder if being a pro is 90% waffle. Epic?

Waffles are awesome (especially with some warm maple syrup), so 90% of that is pretty good in my book

super sharp, almost too sharp. his skin really jumps out at you

his extra large pupils is a little erie to me

Imo dof is too thin. Eyes, nose and mouth is in focus and everything else is a blur.
I think in a portrait eye brows, hair and jaw line should be in focus.

i love the shallow dof... i did shots of my kids in the same format.

one thing that is severely lacking is the eyes, you need to dodge and burn the irises and enhance those catchlights, hell even paint them up a bit.

i wont hijack you thread but check the two i did and you can see how the eyes stand out when you process them properly.

I like the sharpness of the eyes, but I find it weird to have such large pupils so the color is not as pronounced, but that's just me.

Indeed they are!

I like them! They're not the standard portrait/headshot that everyone expects. As business portraits, do they work? In my opinion...no. But as creative portraits they work for me! Nicely done!

I am curious, after I google search Sam Hurd and looked through his Epic Portraits series...3 shot brenizer? I'm curious as to what 3 shots you took and what lens you used for these. Obviously you shot wide open.

Thank you! It took a lot of trial and error, but essentially you're wanting to shoot these like you would any other panoramic, just wide open instead of at your normal studio settings.
