So recently my wife and I just had our first child and this gives me a good 'excuse' to do a weekly project, but so far I'm failing terribly at it. Looking for a little C&C and Advice. Basically I'm using window light and a reflector. We're about 3-4 feet from the window.

First off, congrats! Cute little guy you got there. :)

My advice would be to go to a home goods store and buy a metal drink bucket. Fluff the blanket up in it and lay him in. For now, you can shoot from above, and then when he begins sitting up, you can sit him up with some sort of background. This will serve to give interest and depth, as well as give a comparison marker for his growth. Additionally, it will contain him for a moment when he becomes mobile. Just my 2¢ for whatever they're worth, good luck with your project!

Thanks for the info everyone! I just feel like I'm not getting the picture to 'pop' and isn't sharp.

I think that soft light without a lot of "pop" is ideal for babies. What was your ISO, f-stop, & shutter speed?

You are more ambitious than me- we are doing monthly photos. We used my wife's favorite stuffed animal as a child to include in each photo, as a marker to show how he's grown. Just did 2 months this weekend!

One Month (external link) f/2.5, 1/80 sec, 30mm ISO 400

Two Months (external link) f/4, 1/100 sec, 30mm ISO 100

He's in a rocking chair in his room- one month was a monolight in a bounced umbrella, two month was a speedlight through a shoot through umbrella. I'll probably stick with the speedlight going forward.

I agree with this. I think you could do something a bit more interesting other than a baby and a chalkboard. The metal drink bucket is a good idea and will really work well with the growing of the child. I assume that eventually you'll slow down and start doing monthly photos once he is 2 or so but it would still be funny to see the entire series of his childhood ending with one of him sprawled out over the bucket or crouched inside of it as a 5 year old.

I've got twins that are due in about 2 weeks and I've been trying to figure out a way to document their growth as well and I may go with the metal bucket thing too :D

Congrats future dad! I had a friend that had twins, but one was a boy and one was a girl. They just did pink and blue laundry baskets because for awhile they fit in them, then after that you can cage them in and do all sorts of fun stuff.

Thanks! Mine are boy/girl as well. That's a great idea! I'll have to see if I can find some laundry baskets in blue and pink.

Sorry, not a 100% sure what you're asking.

I think what was asked was what is the photo-frame thing - is it a slate chalk-board or is it a graphic?

I would be tempted to keep ISO no higher than 200, why not use your prime and stand further back?

Ah, it's just a slate chalk board picture frame we used at our wedding.

I can try that next time, I figured since I wouldn't need f/1.4 it would just use my Tammy and zoom in as needed.
