Focus problem serial number dependant ?

Hi,

Today I saw an advertisment on-line from a retailer who sold 10D's with serial numbers lower than 5 having the focus problem, and with serial numbers higher than 6 which would be good.

Is this true ?

My camera starts with 5xxxxxxx so I guess I'm in the middle .

I have a 59xxxxxxx serial, and i have yet to have a problem with focusing like everyone else says. Who else out there is having NO problems with focusing?
(then again some times I use the secret function no one seems to know of....its called a manual focusing ring....lol)

Not sure of the validity of the claim, but I have two 10d cameras, one is a 4 serial number and one is a 6 and neither has exhibited any focus problems.

Absolutely invalid.

The majority of 10D's produced since day one had NO focus problems whatsoever. Now the likelihood of a higher serial number having the problem will be less for sure. There have been no major complaints of focus problems for quite some time.

What I thought was hilarious is that when all that was going on, you read of D30/60 and even 1D and 1Ds people saying they had focus problems.

There sure was a lot of ruler-shooting going on back then.

I returned 2 10D's with focus problems. I didn't think to look the first time. The second time I did. It was 4xxxxxxx. Now I have a good one and it is 6xxxxxxx. I am sick and tired of people who were lucky enough not to have problems making statements insinuating the rest of us don't know how to use the equipment.

Yes I agree, Chris. I have a 4xxxxxx camera that was perfect right out of the box.

I guarantee there are still focus-challenged 10D's out there on the shelves. Just test it when you get it. And it's easy to buy local in large metro areas now. Fry's had an ad last Thursday that showed 10D's for $1497. Might be a little easier to return then. But heck, with Fry's they might just be buying all the focus-challenged cameras cut-rate. You gotta be careful shopping there.

I will agree about Fry's. You have to be very careful.

Fry's is a chain of electronic stores, and I have probably spent over $5000 at five of their stores over the last couple of years. In fact, I used to shop at their original store many moons ago. Many of their big-ticket consumer items have been previously purchased and returned. Their return policy is liberal, so that seems to encourage customers to purchase anything on a whim, try it out, and then return it.

As a result, lots of boxes are opened and then resealed with a Fry's quality sticker on it. I don't believe that for an instant. For one thing, those people are not camera experts, to say the least, so I don't think that I would purchase a $1500 camera body from Fry's. I've purchased two computers of that cost, but they understand computers much better.

My first D10 was a 4xxxxxxxxxxx and the focus could not have been worse. I returned it and got a 6xxxxxxxx and lo and behold it is perfect. I agree with my peers, I get pissed by those of you who think every problem with a piece of equipment is user error.
We all know now that there was a widespread problem with the early production models of this camera and thank goodness, all is well now (as far as we know).

I have an 2xxxxxxxxxxxx model and its all okay. (Yes, i was quick on the trigger)

Therefore the answer is that it might be serial number dependant in some cases, since the quality will improve over the production time. But im sure that some cameras even in the 6xxxx-series will float up with fokus-issues.

They charge € 250,00 ($ 300,00) more for the 6xxxxx numbers so I guess they will be selling only 6xxxxx numbers, thought it was a lame claim indeed.

This is a Canadian model.
