A good find and great shots, Trevor; I tend to associate great grays with winter and it always startles me when I find one in summer.

I was even in an area not typical, of it's habitat. So I was actually startled. I saw the figure as I was driving, and said to my wife, "thats too big to be a hawk". As we got closer I then exclaimed, "holy Sh*$, thats a great grey"

Just for my own personal curiosity I have an image of a swainson's hawk on a post very similar to the owls. So I decided to do an overlay comparison, just for fun. Keep in mind the owl is not standing straight up, but the hawk is. It's a quick photoshop edit, and it's certainly not perfect; perspective wise and measured distance. It's just an approximation.
