I'm looking at upgrading my 550D, a camera I've been extremely happy with, apart from its performance at the two airshows I've used it at, in conjunction with a 70-200mm f2.8 II & TC 1.4.

From my research either the 70D or 5DIII are mainly used by the airshow photographers here, but I'm curious as to what experience others have had here using the 6D as an airshow body, and as an 'action' capturing body. Apart from Jan Jasinski I haven't noticed many other members using the 6D at airshows.

Secondly, how will the 6D perform ( and the 5DIII) with the 70-200mm/1.4 TC combination? If i do go FF I would prefer not purchase a 100-400mm dust trombone just for the odd airshow.

Thanks in advance,

WaterBoy2090

The most important aspects of air show photography are lenses (300mm can be considered a minimum for aerial displays) and light (no lens can compensate for a heavily backlit show where you need to sight into the sun). By comparison, the camera body isn't as important.

Why write this? From experience, including these air show images from a Canon 550D (T2i badged in this case), which worked with no problems.

If you're having problems at an air show, the trouble may come with the lens and teleconverter combination. Consider renting a suitably long lens. The lens used for these sample images was a Sigma 150-500mm OS.

Air shows are pretty easy to get good results with a DSLR. The 6d will do just fine with the combo listed.

I've used the 6D paired with a EF 70-200mm f/2.8L + 1.4x combo with great success at air shows. I prefer this lens combo over the Ef 100-400mm with either the 7D or 6D. More flexibility and for me at least - easier to control and hold on target.

Thanks for the info and examples; not wanting to sound conceited, but it's made me realise my disappointment with my 550D has had more to do with the ambient lighting at the airshows than the camera, and confirmed that the 6D will perform admirably for the occasional airshow outing!

Regards, WaterBoy!
