I've been home-modifying my hoods like that for years. All it takes is a bit of velveteen material and a few pieces of Velcro.

You should have patented it I don't think I am capable enough to do a job like that without destroying the lens hood though

The nice Canon peeps occasionally clean my sensor when I am working at an appropriate Sporting event (I work in TV), so I am OK with that. I might pop down next week to Calumet if you think they may still have the lens on show?

A little bit of trivia. This lens is the top selling L lens since pre-ordering was announced online. It is outdone by the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens and Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens.
